RETAILER CASE STUDY | Alno by Diane Berry

wow factor Practicality with the

When a family wanted to double the size of their kitchen, they called on Diane Berry Kitchens for something special. Diane Berry talks us through the project

F 56

or this project, I started by creating an extra door into the utility room, and divided the laundry area into two completely separate rooms, so the back door now opened into a boot room.

This provided loads of storage space for the

family’s shoes and coats, as well as seating. It also served the additional purpose of allowing them to keep their dog away from clean laundry when coming back from a walk. The laundry room is now located off the kitchen and can also act as a butler’s pantry when they are entertaining. I decided to relocate the freezer into this room too, to allow for the inclusion of a large food pantry in the kitchen.

I designed the two doors leading into the laundry and boot room as pocket doors so that, even when they are open, they wouldn’t be in the family’s way. One of the challenges was to provide concealed ventilation for the fridge and freezer, as they fi t tight to the feature ceiling. We created a vent in the underside of the lowered ceiling, which then feeds the warm air back into the room in the hidden lighting trough. This is always a challenge for us and our installation team as the on-site joiners always want an easy option and we always want the very best. So our fi tters have to be fi rm but gentle, as we know what we want, but need them to be on board with it. We show them lots of drawings and have in-depth discussions to make sure we get the right ventilation installed.

We had a similar thing with the boxing for the half-

fl oating ovens as this must be load-bearing and square and true. All this is done before plastering, and we are in the hands of the client’s on-site joiners. This kitchen ticked all the boxes for their wish list and to add to create something special for this luxury house, I designed a coffered ceiling that has hidden LED lighting, helping us to create mood lighting for the evenings and task lighting for cooking. The colours are timeless and calming. We provide drawings and send a joiner to the site to make sure they understand everything that is required and to let them know they can ring us anytime with any questions. This makes our install run smoothly as it is all done properly before we arrive with the kitchen.
