Taking education higher

n July, the industry reacted strongly to the closure of the Foundation Degree in Kitchen Design course at Bucks New University. The course, which ran from 2014, was a hybrid learning format that ran residential weekends and online teaching. After its closure, the industry needed a replacement and so Grey and Matson have stepped up to create a new professional apprenticeship degree course. The contents for the course have been accepted by the Department for Education’s (DoE) Apprenticeships


team, however it still needs final university and funding band approval.


The course will take four years and will include some elements from the former Bucks Uni course, like the residential weekends and will focus on kitchens and living spaces. The course has support from the DoE’s Institute for Apprenticeships, but still needs approval from Ofsted, the university and the DoE, meaning the first intake of students isn’t going to happen until September 2024 at the earliest. Grey is also in discussions with the University of Portsmouth for adapting interior design degrees and other blends of design disciplines with kitchen design.
