Authorising Engineers Conference 2026
This year’s IHEEM Authorising Engineers Conference, supported by 2026 Events Partner Eta Projects, delivered an exceptional programme, offering delegates the opportunity to hear the latest updates and engage in open forum discussions on a broad range of healthcare sector topics from an AE perspective.
The well-attended event centred around this year’s theme of ‘Implementing the Standard’ – a nod to the evolving nature of the role and requirements of the Authorising Engineer.
The highly anticipated opening
keynote saw the panel of Fiona Daly, national deputy director of estates for NHS England, Kay Mulcahy, associate director of national estates operations at NHS England, IHEEM CEO Pete Sellars, and business development director and past president of IHEEM Paul Fenton providing updates on the IHEEM-NHS England AE agreement, the experiences of an AE working in NHS infrastructure, and the broader challenges facing the national workforce.
A thought provoking and interactive session from Brian Kirk, IHEEM Decontamination Technical Platform chair, and Carl-Magnus von Behr, co-founder and CEO of CompliMind, explored misconceptions and realities around the implementation of AI within AE work streams. Addressing the question ‘Will AI take on the role of the AE?’,

Carl-Magnus von Behr put to delegates that by knowing when to use and not to use it, AI can be an invaluable tool for streamlining workflow and improving time splits across tasks, allowing for freed up time available to allocate to clinch, assurance, training, and research and development. Further sessions throughout the day focused on discipline-specific insights from IHEEM Technical Platform leaders, with guidance on legislation and best practice being shared across confined spaces and pressure systems, fire safety, medical engineering, and lifts – one of the newest platforms to be established by the Institute. The closing session gave personal accounts of the route
to becoming an AE and towards professional registration from Robert Zalewski, Electrical AE, Ben Martin, director of M&M Consultancy and Training Services Ltd, and Jason Fisher, managing director of Beattie Flanigan, who chaired the session. The segment proved insightful to conference attendees who noted the value and reassurance in hearing first- hand accounts of members who had been through the process and supported by the Institute to achieve their accreditations via standard and non-standard routes.
