The Big Bang Competition Winner Announced
The Institute was proud to present the IHEEM Special Award for Innovation in Wellbeing and Healthcare Engineering to Noor Fatimah, as part of The Big Bang Competition.
Noor, a year 12 student from Debden Park High School, impressed the judging panel with her winning entry, ‘The Smart Grommet’: a dual-action approach to preventing middle-ear infection. Along with an invitation to present at this year’s Healthcare Estates, the Institute has pledged a
bursary of £5,000 to this year’s winner, in support of further academic or career pursuits. This year’s Competition saw over 850 young people taking part, encouraging students to ‘think big, challenge facts, ask questions, and invent solutions’. EngineeringUK, who deliver The Big Bang Competition and Fair, confirmed that health and wellbeing continued to be an important theme across the programme, with many students using their STEM skills to explore ways to improve physical health and wellbeing in society. IHEEM CEO Pete Sellars further committed the Institute’s continued support of The Competition and the IHEEM Special Award on a rolling basis going forwards, saying: “I am delighted and inspired to see that through this award, we can recognise the innovations and hard work of young people across the UK, inspiring and engaging them in the many ways healthcare engineering can help and benefit others, and the career and future paths available to them.”
