recyclable. EU legislation stipulates an obligation for all plastic packaging put on the EU market by 2030 to be recyclable. This will not only maintain the highest value of the material at the end of its life, but also make recycling more cost-effective while meeting the requirements of the most demanding applications. All new products placed on the market must be fully compatible with recycling technologies if we are to move towards circular economy. Additionally, taking the existing legislative steps to drive the uptake of recyclates is yet another avenue that must be fully exploited. The recycled rigid polyolefins content must be wid- ened, which will require collaboration throughout the industry together with European policymakers.” Major rigid packaging producer Berry Global has also made progress in food-grade rPP. Earlier in September, the US company announced its CleanStream recycling technology has been granted a Letter of No Objection (LNO) from the US FDA. The LNO confirms that the post-consumer recycled PP produced by the CleanStream process can be used in levels up to 100% recycled content for food contact applications. CleanStream is a proprietary technology developed by Berry that is able to identify and separate food use packaging from mixed domestic collections. The company says one of its major benefits is that it can operate within existing
waste management infrastructures. CleanStream utilises automated sorting and decontamination processes that integrate online sensor technolo- gies and machine learning algorithms, which Berry says removes the need for the use of marker or other digital technologies. “The target markets for this material are all contact sensitive applications, in particular cosmet- ics and personal care as well as food contact,” says Mark Roberts, Circular Value Chain Director, Berry Global Consumer Packaging International. “Follow- ing the successful granting of the US FDA LNO, we will now be pursuing EU approvals for the material for food packaging applications.” According to an in-depth life cycle analysis by
Quantis, the CleanStream process generates 35% lower CO2 emissions than virgin PP production, and packaging made with the material will have a 20% lower impact. The rPP will be produced at Berry’s £17m purpose-built facility in Leamington Spa, UK, which is due to go on stream later this year. The recyclate will be exclusively available for use in Berry manufactured packaging solutions, such as the recently launched B Circular Range Beauty Collection. Today, many companies are actively working on
decorative packaging technologies that are not disruptive to the recycling processes. Labels on rigid packaging are a target area. Label producer Avery Dennison has removed a key obstacle with the introduction of next generation AD CleanFlake Adhesive Technology, becoming the first label manufacturer to enable rigid plastic recycling across its portfolio. The adhesive technology is designed to help both PET and HDPE rigid packaging in the recycling process. During PET recycling, the adhesive deactivates to allow both label and adhesive to separate cleanly, leaving the PET free of
