EXHIBITION PREVIEW | K2022 MATERIALS
Right: BASF is showing at K2022 its IrgaCycle range of additives to improve mechanical recycling
AF-Colour will showcase its colour and additive masterbatches, with a particular focus on products for future-oriented applications that support circular economy initiatives. One of the highlights will be AF-Carbon IR, a
family of carbon black-free masterbatches for improved infrared detectability. Carbon black pigments can lead to faulty detection of packaging in infrared sorting plant; the AF-Carbon IR formula- tions increase detection and sorting recyclability. The AF-Complex range provide additive solu- tions to different recycling challenges. For example, a drying masterbatch is offered in different versions (standard and premium) that is suitable for use with recycled film or injection moulded parts and offers a drying capability of up to 80%. The range also includes a highly-effective absorber for sulphur and nitrogen odour components, which is said to be particularly suitable for recycled polyamide (PA) as well as polyolefins (PE and PP). A number of crosslinker additive products, that
are claimed to be able to significantly improve processability of recycled PE and PA by adapting flow behaviour, complement the portfolio.

Atlas Weathering Services Group (AWSG) will be detailing VIEW (Virtual Inspection and Evaluation of Weathering), its advanced remote materials evaluation service. VIEW allows clients to observe the effects of
weathering in real time from anywhere in the world, avoiding the challenges and expense of an on-site visit. Using the system’s secure video software, a client can interact with an AWSG technician equipped with camera-enabled glasses to observe their specimens in situ. They can zero-in on specific areas of interest using tools such as a built-in digital microscope.

Avient will be showing a whole range of compounds and additive products focused on recycled content and recycling applications. It will also present its PCR Colour Prediction Service, which is intended to help recyclers of post consumer polyolefin and PET resins achieve colour consistency. The company’s engineered polymer solutions include two additions to its reSound REC TPE portfolio, both formulated with polyvinyl butyral (PVB) recycled from automotive glass. It will also show the latest additions to its portfolio of Complēt REC LFT composites based on recycled resins. Avient will also show its latest polyolefin antioxi- dants, Cesa Nox A4R additives for recycling. These

are formulated to simplify processing of PCR content. The PCR Colour Prediction Service will be demon-
strated. Intended to help brand owners understand what colours are achievable based on the amount of PCR used, the company describes this as a first of its kind for the plastics industry. It uses proprietary software to measure resin characteristics and identify the gamut of colours that can be successfully reproduced in a specific PCR-based material.

At K2022, additives producer Baerlocher is taking part in a live HDPE recycling challenge with partners Erema, PreZero and W. Müller. For the demonstration, PreZero will supply the HDPE regrind from consumer waste which has been through sorting, washing and grinding processes. The material will then be repelletised on an Erema Intarema TVEplus recycling line, where melt filtration and vacuum degassing are performed under the ideal, gentle conditions necessary to avoid degrading the material. Erema will further demonstrate how valuable add-on equipment, a Koch-Technik Feeder, can expand the number of commercial opportunities the machinery can take on. This feeder is used to introduce a performance enhancing One-Pack additive of Baerlocher’s Baeropol T-Blend family of products into the process. Erema has coupled the recycling line with a deodorising ReFresher-module as installed at PreZero, which effectively eliminates unpleasant smells from the material. Validation of the resulting product has been conducted by W.Müller.

BASF says the theme for its K2022 presence will be the “Plastics Journey”, which it breaks down into three key phases: Make, Use and Recycle. “The Make phase is about improving how plastics are made, from product design to the
