Covestro plans first mechanical recycling line for polycarbonates

Covestro has announced plans to set up its first dedicated line for the mechanical recycling of polycarbonates at its integrated site in Shanghai, China. It also plans to repurpose an existing compounding line at its Map Ta Phut site in Thailand to a plant for mechanical recycling.

When commissioned in 2023 the line in Shanghai, which represents an investment of more than €27m, will be capable of delivering more than 25,000 tonnes/yr of high-quality PC compounds and blends containing mechanically recycled content. Overall, the company aims to be capable of delivering more than 60,000 tonnes/yr of PC with recycled content in Asia Pacific by 2026. Covestro said the new line in Shanghai will address the growing demand for recyclate in E&E products, automotive applications, and consumer goods. Lily Wang, Head of

Covestro’s Engineering Plastics segment, said: “To meet the rapid growth in demand for more sustain- able and circular solutions from our downstream customers, we will continue to invest in expanding our capabilities. This [mechani- cal recycling] production line is the latest example of our efforts in this regard and signals our commitment to driving the transition to more sustainable products
