TECHNOLOGY | SORTING

The Autosort units incorporate NIR and visible light sensor technologies to recover five different types of plastics (LDPE, HDPE, PP, PET, and mixed plastics) from the infeed material. The green bags are separated from the remaining waste, with the biogas transferred to a biogas site where the organics are converted into biofertilisers as well as biogas, used for refueling the waste collection trucks. Magnets and eddy-current separators remove metallic fractions. In 2021, the ROAF plant reached a sorting target

A second container holds paper and cardboard, while a third container collects glass and metal packaging. A ROAF truck transports the containers to its

sorting centre, which is fully equipped with trommels, bag openers, ballistic separators, overhead magnets, and vibratory screens that work in unison with 16 Tomra Autosort optical sorters to process 40 tonnes/hr of waste, recovering plastic, organics and paper with high levels of accuracy.

of 3,600 tonnes for plastics and 11,500 tonnes for organics, up from the 2,500 tonnes of plastics and 6,000 tonnes of organics in 2014. In this case, the plastics and waste recovery rates are higher when plastics are not collected separately but together with organics and residual waste. ROAF aims to reach reuse and recycling rates of 70% by 2030, in line with EU targets calling for plastic recycling rates of 55% and municipal solid waste recycling rates of 60% by 2030. Fluctuating material availability and the associ-

ated fluctuating material quality are among the biggest challenges facing recycling companies which can impact profitability, says equipment
