Converting recycled plastics into new green geotextiles


Recycled materials are creating new opportunities in geotextile production. In the Green project, the


Fraunhofer Cluster of Excellence Circular Plastics Economy (CCPE) showed that recycled polypropyl- ene (PP), PET and high- density polyethylene (HDPE) can be processed into nonwovens, fibres, and membranes that meet industrial requirements. Geosynthetics are widely used in infrastruc- ture, water management, mining and other fields. However, producers are under to reduce the use of virgin plastics and use more recycled content. The project’s goal is to create high-performance geotextiles from recycled plastic streams that meet industrial needs. The study shows that post-consumer material streams can be used for


ABS ABS for edge band application


Ineos Styrolution is supplying Italian edge band manufacturer Monguzzi with Lustran 532 – an mABS grade designed for demanding extrusion processes. The material combines easy processing, flowability, dimensional stability and a stable colour base for self-colouring. This supports efficient extrusion and consistent visual quality, says the company. Ageing tests also confirmed the durability of the new materials – with HDPE membranes showing no critical loss of strength even after extended testing. As part of the environ- mental assessment, nonwo- ven fabrics made from recycled PET (r-PET) and recycled PP (r-PP), as well as PE membranes, were tested


in accordance with DIN EN 16637-2. The leaching and ecotoxicity tests confirmed low substance release and no relevant ecotoxicological effects. Pilot trials conducted


within Fraunhofer demon- strate the transferability of these approaches to industrial production. Gabriel-Chemie has introduced PFAS- and silicone-free PPA master- batches for extrusion. These new solutions, based on hydrocarbon technology, were devel- oped to optimise process- ing properties while meeting regulatory requirements. In industrial production trials, they showed comparable process stability and product quality. The products reduce die build-up and machine pressure, improve process stability and impart good optical properties, smooth surfaces and uniform film thickness in blown film applications.
