Recycled plastic output stalled in Europe to 2024
Production of recycled plastics in Europe was stagnant between 2022 and 2024. A biennial report from Plastics Europe – which represents polymer produc- ers – says recycled plastics production reached 8.7m tonnes in 2024. This 1.2% annual growth was out- stripped by an equivalent 7.7% growth globally. Europe still has the
largest share of recycled plastics (15.8%) in relation to total production. However, this was driven mainly by a decline in fossil-based plastics production – which fell 8.3% to around 43m tonnes between 2022 and 2024. European converter demand for recycled plastics is also slowing, falling from 16.2% annual growth in 2022 to 4% in 2024, said the report, ‘The Circular Economy for

New data on trade also shows Europe’s depend- ence on external markets: 19% of converter demand for recycled plastics was met through imports, while 12.4% of Europe’s collected waste is recycled elsewhere. In addition, 25% of convert- er demand for virgin plastics comes from abroad. Virginia Janssens, managing director of Plastics Europe, said: “We must create the business case for circular plastics in Europe, by making it economically attractive to keep and recycle our plastic waste.” �

Carbios calls delay
in China Enzymatic recycling company Carbios says commissioning of its PET biorecycling plant in Haining, Zhejiang Prov- ince in China has been postponed until the first half of 2028. The company said the
joint project with Wankai is moving forward, with progress being made in preparatory steps and the validation of locally available waste streams, but has run into difficulty over extra technical work required to adapt the site. With a 50,000 tonnes/
year capacity of PET waste, the facility is expected to be a key milestone in the industri- alisation and deployment of Carbios’ enzymatic recycling technology in Asia when when com- plete, said the company. �
