Coffee in PP At this year’s Interpack, Suedpack showed several examples of how its CarbonLite film family can be used to make pouches for various applications. In the first example, machinery maker Hesser


Packaging and Suedpack showed an all-PP pouch for whole coffee beans. The pouches have a high oxygen and moisture barrier, helping to presere aroma and freshness and protect against UV light. The flow pack films in the CarbonLite range are lightweight and “more than 90% recyclable” (according to current PPWR design principles), helping to reduce their carbon footprint compared compared to conventional laminates. They can also be processed on existing equipment on an industrial scale.


Hesser showcased its PMX 4001 to make the


pouches. The compact, robust vertical flow pack machine was developed for the requirements of coffee packaging and can be used as a standalone machine or integrated into a turnkey line solution.


Despite its small footprint, it achieves an output of up to 65 pouches per minute and can produce a wide range of pouch formats and sealing options. Suedpack also teamed up with SN Maschinen-


bau on two recyclable pouch concepts: a PurePE stand-up pouch with a zipper closure for grated cheese; and a PP-based stand-up pouch with an integrated spout for fruit purée. To make the pouches, SN presented its FLH 300 hygienic machine, along with the new HSF 100 spouted pouch packaging machine. “Processing recyclable packaging materials is


more complex and more demanding than working with conventional materials – which makes closer collaboration with the packaging material manufac- turer essential,” said Felix Eberhardi, marketing team leader at SN Maschinenbau. CarbonLite Doypack PurePE was used for the stand-up pouch, which was produced on the FLH 300 – a horizontal pouch-packaging machine. The films shown at Interpack offer stability comparable to conventional film laminates despite their 85-mi- cron thickness. A PE-based zipper system enables convenient opening and reclosing of the pack.
