new bridge has two separate roadways – with each having four general purpose lanes and two express lanes.


One of the biggest challenges in the design was a stormwater drainage system for the bridge’s causeways. The area was flat – and grades needed to be changed for all drainage systems. HP Storm polypropylene pipe from ADS was used as part of a drainage system to prevent erosion of low-lying areas leading up to the causeways. It provided the strength and stiffness required after fill material was added to Tampa Bay to create a wider causeway. The pipe’s strength and premium joints were also critical, because the differences in elevation meant that variable height barriers were required. The pipe was installed close to the wall, so had to minimise the chance of leaks – which could cause erosion and affect the walls’ stability. In addition, Duraslot slotted drainage pipe was used between the express and general-use traffic lanes to handle stormwater runoff. This, in turn, prevents hydroplaning. Duraslot is made from N-12 pipe – comprising HDPE with an aluminium slot mounted on top. Both types of pipe had to be resilient to


saltwater and not corrode in this aggressive environment. Nearly 10,000 feet of HP Storm PP pipe – of various diameters – and more than 700 ft of 12in diameter HDPE slotted surface trench drain were used. The ADS pipe provided the specified flow rates, had high structural integrity and met the 100-year design life. Delivering the pipe as needed saved the contractor time, reduced labour and minimised the need for heavy equipment. Another polyolefin pipe project was recognised

Sag resistance Infrastructure pipe maker Kuzeyboru has supplied infrastructure pipe – made from BorSafe from Borealis – to a wastewater project in northern Türkiye. The project, in Samsun on the Black Sea coast, will double the city’s wastewater capacity. The new pipeline is 160mm in diameter and 4.5km long. Kuzeyboru used a PE100 Black grade with sag resistance from the BorSafe portfolio to produce the pipes. “This project reflects our commitment to delivering reliable, high-performance solutions that support the infrastructure needs of growing cities,” said Bülent Karaman, CEO of Kuzeyboru. “Working with partners like Borealis helps us ensure the quality and longevity of the systems we build.” PE100 Black ready-made compound materials


are a type of HDPE designed for use in pressure pipe systems.


With a minimum required strength of 10MPa,


they offer the durability and performance needed for such applications, says Borealis. Separate to this, Krah Pipes has used BorSafe to


make six segments of a 3000mm-diameter pipe – which replaces an old underground concrete water tank in Aarhus, Denmark. The new pipes are used to store 2000m³ of drinking water. The pipes are made using two advanced PE


grades based on Borstar polymerisation technology. The main pipe body is made from BorSafe HE3490-LS-H, a high-density PE100-RC PE compound developed for pressure pipes. It offers high resistance to slow crack growth and rapid crack propagation, for durability in demanding applications. The yellow inner layer, made of BorSafe HE3493-LS-H, is also a PE100-RC material and adds extra functionality to the system – as the light colour makes it easier to carry out visual inspections by camera when needed.
