according to ISO 16770. For welded pressure pipeline systems, this gives extra long-term safety, especially in cyclically stressed weld zones. Welding was carried out by Hydrokarst Swiss, and the pipeline was used at a depth of 38m.
River crossing Agru’s US division was a winner in last year’s Plastic Pipe Institute (PPI) awards for its part in a boat harbour project in Virginia. The project required more than a mile of 42in diameter pipe to be run under the James River – nearly 20,000 feet of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) pipe – in less than 24 hours, for a new force main. In collaboration with Performance Pipe, Agru
provided the pipe in diameters of 42-54in for the new pipeline – which takes raw wastewater underneath the James River to the Nansemond Treatment Plant in Suffolk, Virginia. The HDPE pipe was chosen because it is flexible, resilient, and can be installed using horizontal directional drilling (HDD). The pipe is not affected by corrosive salt water and is leak-free. The award was also shared by High Country Fusion – which provided the pipe, fittings, fusion
equipment and led the offshore team.
Bridge building A second winner at the awards was Advanced Drainage Systems (ADS), for its part in the construction of the new Howard Frankland Bridge in Tampa, Florida. The bridge has more than 2.6 million sq ft of
deck area, and cost US$875 million. Originally built as a single, four-lane, three-mile span in 1960, the
