for other vehicles in front of it. It also senses vehicles in the other lanes. When the vehicle or other object begins to slow down,

or comes to a stop, the system alerts the driver. It issues a distance alert. This lets the driver know that the gap between the school bus and the vehicle it is following is becoming potentially dangerous. If the distance closes too much and too soon, an im-

pact alert sounds just before automatically applying the brakes, to help mitigate a collision. The radar senses the vehicle in front, and if that vehi-

cle slows down rapidly, the system reacts to it. But if the vehicle is stationary, such as a stalled car, the radar sys- tem will only alert the driver. Both the radar and camera system will alert and also provide braking. The camera adds information, to produce a better

reaction than the radar alone. It will also alert the driver sooner. Apply the brake sooner, the logic goes, and miti- gate the accident sooner. Thomas Built Buses use collision avoidance systems from Mobileye. Leslie Kilgore, vice president of engi-

neering for the bus manufacturer that is based in High Point, N.C., cited the NHTSA statistic that 93 percent of crashes are due to human error. “An alert system, such as Mobileye N.V.’s collision avoidance system, can give a distracted driver the opportunity to avoid a collision or mitigate its severity,” she explained. Kilgore noted that, “The safety benefits of collision

avoidance systems like Mobileye’s have been proven to reduce collisions, and the injuries and fatalities that result. In fact, in its most recent report, NHTSA recom- mends all vehicles be equipped with a forward collision avoidance system.” Thomas Built Buses provides standard ESC, which has been part of the OEM’s BusWise system since 2015. Last summer, Thomas President and CEO Caley Edgerly said ESC not only increases safety, but also can save money on repairs and avoid vehicle downtime that would result from crashes. Thomas also offers a factory-installed BusWise option

that provides collision prevention and mitigation, by warning drivers of potential incidents before they hap-
