Splicing without paper tearing
C
ontinuous line speed changes, speed reduction during splicing, paper
tearing, slippage and paper waste are a few of the many issues that often occur during the corrugating process. Customers report excessive downtimes which negatively affect the process efficiency.
Renova, represented in the UK by Jarshire Limited, has devised and patented a system with the aim of improving every phase of production: Revolution, an energy- recovery hybrid brake. Its patented design is the combination of a regenerative motor and a pneumatic brake, which operate with ‘hybrid regulation’ meaning brake and motor always work in
tandem ensuring maximum performance in all working conditions.
During splicing, paper tearing can adversely affect production. In fact, during this phase, the web is pulled via the splicing tape draw while the roll is still stationary, so breakages can occur due to light weight papers or because the tape did not grip correctly. To avoid this the line speed is reduced during splicing leading to reduced production. Revolution accelerates the roll on its axis, not via the paper web, helping the roll to overcome initial inertia which, due to faster splicing speeds, increases production. Pneumatic brakes,

used in corrugating, emit thermal energy. The Revolution system partially recovers this energy that can be reused in the plant’s electrical supply. Revolution allows corrugators to splice at speeds at least 25% faster and take advantage of recovered energy. It’s a simple and fast installation allowing retrofitting on all roll stands with different shaft or chuck configurations. The
integrated system also includes an easy to use control panel and a cabinet containing all the electronic components to connect it to the plant electric supply.

Kadant grows long-established partnership in Europe
or many years, Kadant has worked closely with a multinational business specialising in sustainable packaging solutions, integrated recycling services and sustainable paper products on a range of projects across a variety of Kadant products. It has recently continued to grow its long-established partnership by signing contracts to upgrade several of the group’s steam & condensate systems across Europe.
F
This multimillion-euro investment by one of Europe’s largest paper producers illustrates the confidence in Kadant to deliver the latest in energy saving solutions to the paper industry. Recent projects in several locations follow prior successful steam system upgrades, with
further investments having been made based on Kadant’s tried and tested approach to improving steam system efficiency and operation.
How does Kadant improve steam system efficiency and operation? - Firstly, a detailed dryer performance evaluation takes place to model the process, understand the steam system performance and to quantify the energy efficiency. When the losses from the system are understood, a comprehensive solution is proposed to modify the steam system to improve efficiency. These changes are customised to each paper machine and can include new flash steam recovery systems, additional
heat exchangers, new dryer syphon and rotary joint hardware, modifications to the cascade network and control philosophy or the addition of thermocompressors. In each case, the exact solution is matched with the individual machine’s requirements. The required mechanical and process changes are then complemented by the Kadant Dryer Management
System® (DMS® ) control
technology. This supervisory software allows for constant monitoring and optimisation of the dryer system set points to ensure repeatable, first-class operation and energy usage.
Kadant’s steam system group is based across Europe allowing localised support while using the latest design software and steam system technologies. This allows energy saving solutions to be executed in minimum time during planned shutdowns.
