British Paper Machinery News 13

Can you help capture our past 90 years?

urnbull & Scott (Engineers) Ltd has been part of the industrial landscape of Hawick in the Scottish Borders since 1933 and now in 2023 it celebrates its 90th anniversary. Throughout the decades, the company has had connections to numerous organisations and people and is now seeking assistance to gather as thorough a record of its history as possible. Peter Murphy, Managing Director explains, “We are extremely proud of our long history in Hawick, and we hope that in sharing our history on our website, we can illustrate our appreciation of the people and the values that have made the company what it is today. We appeal to not only to the local community and past employees, but to past customers and suppliers too, to help us collect stories, newspaper cuttings, pictures and artefacts that they may have of earlier times at Turnbull & Scott, so we can consolidate and share a deeper appreciation of who we are.”

Throughout 2023, the Turnbull & Scott (T&S) team will be sharing stories, photos and more on its website to showcase its journey through the decades. Already accounts from people, families and company archives are amassing and the first pages on its illustrious history have been launched. These begin with the story of the company's formation during a tumultuous time and include the tale of a fascinating hand tool which was recovered from Germany during the second World War. An extensive corporate history web page has just been launched which

H&M’s 1972 annual report shows T&S as part of the group

companies that T&S has had ties with over the years. The page outlines how Hunt & Moscrop (H&M), now part of the Voith Group, acquired T&S sometime before 1972. The Annual Report of H&M for 1972 lists T&S as a general engineering business alongside the other group of companies.

These H&M companies

included Hunt & Moscrop Canada, active in textiles and paper, Hunt HX manufacturing extended surface heat exchangers, Johnstone & Hunt

producing shell and tube heat

exchangers, and finally Chemical & Thermal Engineering focused on chemical and process

engineering. It is believed that it was through the connection with H&M and the associated

he Ircon-Solaronics GEM 12-HI emitter, available from Jarshire Limited, combines proven ceramic technology with a new designed 3D lattice screen. The emitter was created using modern manufacturing techniques which led to the use of a silicon carbide based 3D lattice with excellent resistance to high temperatures and thermal shocks, whilst having low thermal inertia and excellent life.

T

Its high radiative efficiency is mainly due to the use of solid

ceramic material operating at 1150°C (2100°F) and a high density SiC lattice facing the ceramic tile to extract additional energy from the hot exiting flue gases which act as a secondary heat exchanger. Rapid cooling and heating allow faster nominal performance as well as quicker and safer shutdown.

The new 3D lattice is made from multiple layers of silicon carbide 3D printed into a carefully constructed design allowing higher emissivity and which increases the radiant surface area.

The emitter gives high power with low emissions and with a guaranteed lifetime of four years and an expected lifetime of eight years, more than 7000 units have been installed.
