Jodie Macleod joins Turnbull & Scott as an R&D engineer

Jodie studied at Heriot-Watt university in Edinburgh and graduated in 2021 with BEng (Hons) in Chemical Engineering, before going on to work for engineering company Atkins where she was employed as a hydraulic modeller. On joining Turnbull & Scott Jodie stated, “I’m extremely excited to work at Turnbull & Scott to develop and learn new skills as well as contributing positively to the projects I’m working on.” Managing Director, Peter Murphy commented, “I’m delighted to have Jodie come on board at this time. Thermal energy storage at industrial scale is a key part of our product development roadmap and one we are seeking to invest in over the coming years.”

alvtech Limited’s pump exchange programme, started at the end of 2022, has shown instant results by giving fast turnaround of pump repairs across UK tissue and board mills. The concept is simple in that customers send in their pumps for servicing, but if they require an extra fast service, they can choose to have an identical refurbished unit delivered from stock instead of waiting for their own unit to be repaired. This means critical pump positions can be replaced quickly thus reducing the risk of unplanned downtime. It also means the mills

S

are less reliant on in-house repairs and parts stock levels which have, in most cases, been scaled back over the last decade as mills push to become leaner in their operations. Of course, this means reliable sub-suppliers are required to provide high quality, fast support. This exchange programme delivers that requirement and has been quickly adopted by a number of major tissue manufacturers. It has been enabled by investment from Salvtech in an increased UK stock of ‘drop-in’ pump units as well as increased levels of individual spares to ensure

almsleys Limited has invested in new

equipment for measuring and analysing vibration. This can be used to assess machine problems and identify the source of vibration related issues. Walmsleys support this real-life measurement work with vibration analysis of CAD models to re-create the problem and propose the best way to fix the issue. On completion of remedial work, further physical

measurements are made to confirm that the problem has been resolved.

The company is already

experienced in analysing machine vibration and roll balancing, but the

new equipment makes identifying sources of vibration quicker and gives a better understanding of the problem.

Services using this equipment include: • Machine framework analysis (static bump tests to identify frame natural frequencies and on the run analysis to identify sources of excitation). This can be backed up with virtual FEA assessment of CAD framework models. Corroded framework can also be checked for reduced plate thickness and resulting reduced stiffness which can sometimes be the problem

high quality duplex parts are always available.

Salvtech’s friendly and

trustworthy team provides tailored solutions to enhance operations, reduce costly downtime and ensure all pump services are as efficient as possible, giving the customer the option to choose the speed of a repair to suit themselves.

• Bearing vibration checks • Machine drive system analysis (motor, gearbox, drive shaft and drive stand assessment)

• Roll balance assessment and re-balancing

Walmsleys has also invested in new thermal imaging equipment. This can be used to investigate machine issues in real time including dryer hood and ducting leak/insulation checks,

identification of pumps, bearings etc running hot and likely to fail, and tracing of cold and hot fluid systems to identify flow and insulation issues.
