Machinery safety evaluation from Pilz


he Machinery Safety Evaluation provided by Pilz Automation Ltd gives a comprehensive overview of the safety and conformity status of the machinery tested under the scope of the evaluation. Customers also receive a list of measures or a check list to quickly derive the measures needed to optimise safety and compliance with the applicable laws, standards and directives.

Efficient overview of the conformity status of your machinery - Have some of your machines been in operation for a


long time and has it been a while since their safety and conformity criteria were assessed? Or have you bought a pre-used plant or machine? Then the first thing you will generally need is a straightforward overview of the safety status of these machines in accordance with the current legal position and applicable standards. Information will also be needed about any urgent upgrade measures needed in order to meet the applicable machinery safety requirements, in accordance with the Machinery Directive, for example. Also you will need to have full liability protection.

oole Projects Limited, the Manchester based independent consultant


engineering company, has recently completed the commissioning of a new headbox dilution system retrofitted to a UK client’s existing 3-ply headbox. Poole Projects surveyed the area using a laser scanner, the scans being compiled and utilised to create a 3D model of the layout.

was tasked with designing a new dilution water fan pump, approach screen and associated control system. Working closely with the mill and suppliers, the proposed system was integrated into the existing fan pumps control system. The dilution header had 89 precision control valves controlling dilution water flow to the centre ply of the headbox. The actuator control system was part of a QCS upgrade provided by ABB. Poole Projects designed the new dilution process and supplied the necessary process,


mechanical and electrical equipment including a new dilution fan pump, pressure screen, pipework, MCC, drives and

instrumentation. The flow and pressure controls were integrated into the mills existing PLC/HMI control system to seamlessly start up and shut down with the existing stock approach system.


The project was implemented by


Poole Projects including purchase of ancillary equipment and installation. Most of the equipment was installed while the machine was running with final break-ins and process control changes implemented during a shut. The new system started up on- time and has exceeded expected

performance levels. The system was designed to control a dilution flow rate up to 20% of the overall flow and preliminary results show a significant improvement on the dry weight 2 sigma values which far exceeds the control performance warranty values using <10% of the overall flow as dilution.
