EDUCATIONAL/STUDENT FACILITIES
than 2,000 hand towels which means the supply will not run out, even during the busiest of recess periods.
There are other measures that can be taken to make the school washroom less intimidating. Effective air fresheners will help to neutralise unpleasant washroom smells, while child-friendly locks will afford privacy and be easy to operate, even for small hands.
Loud flush systems and noisy air dryers can be frightening for younger children, so these should be avoided. The provision of hand towels will avoid the need for hand dryers to be installed, for example.
At Essity, we offer hand hygiene workbooks, manuals, posters and diplomas based around the fictional character of Max. These tools are designed to inform pupils about the importance of hand-washing and allow teachers to plan lessons around hand hygiene.
Providing pleasant, hygienic and fully-functional school toilets is a challenge – particularly when such facilities are not always appreciated by pupils. School washroom provision suffered a severe setback in autumn 2021 when a destructive TikTok craze spread to Europe from the US.

It became a trend for students to vandalise their school washrooms by ripping off dispensers, breaking mirrors and smashing sinks and urinals and posting evidence of this destruction on social media. The ‘Devious Licks’ challenge caused thousands of pounds’ worth of damage and led to a spate of washroom closures as headteachers attempted to minimise the damage. And this resulted in further angst and discomfort for the many pupils who took no part in the vandalism.
While it can be hard to prepare for such random events, the provision of robust, sturdy, lockable dispensers will help to frustrate the more destructive tendencies of pupils.
Providing pleasant washrooms for schoolchildren should not be rocket science, but it can certainly be a challenge. By making a few design changes and by investing wisely in hygiene provision, educational institutions will make their school toilets much more welcoming places for our young.
