Q

: Many businesses have been disappointed by their investment in IoT – is it misunderstood?

Yes, arguably it’s mis-sold. The sensor is only the tip of the iceberg. A sensor won’t save you money, and in isolation neither will the information that it gives you. You need to create action from the information, and to do that you need a data aggregation platform – if that platform can link into a workflow management system (or already has one built in like mpro5) then you can start using the data in real- time to improve efficiency in your business.

A sensor and a dashboard… so what. A sensor and a dashboard with an email alert… meh.

A sensor with a WMS engine comparing multiple data streams and baked in ML (machine learning), like yeah the fridge is hot, but it’s also unusually hot outside, or it’s ‘rush hour’ everyone is always opening it at this time – means you don’t waste effort. You can use a WMS to down-skill the first attender as well, maybe a ping on your mobile to anyone onsite to go and look and answer a few questions, this way, even if you do have to send an engineer, you can massively improve first fix as there has been an unskilled diagnosis flow followed for them first.

Q

: How does IoT make operations more efficient?

See above. IoT doesn’t really – the aggregation of the data does.

Q Q

: What is the relationship between IoT and digitalisation – can you have one without the

other?

There are always benefits in digitalisation, IoT in my opinion should always be phase 2.

: What advice would you give to FM companies looking to invest in IoT?

Speak to me first (laughs). But seriously think about the value first, are you solving a problem or just gathering more data. All successful IoT deployments start with a “I wish I could just…” statement

: How does IoT help me to win new business and retain clients?

Differentiation as mentioned above. But you have to stand in front of that client and demonstrate how you use IoT to save them money – not just stand there and say you use IoT.

: How does IoT help operations to become more efficient and streamlined?

Only when deployed properly. As with anything, if it’s wedged in with little thought it will become a hinderance. It’s not a magic solution – you need to understand what you are trying to solve with IoT before just deploying sensors everywhere.
