HEALTHCARE & HOSPITAL FACILITIES

to clean and sanitise patient areas. For example a new machine called the Xenex Robot uses xenon bulbs and ultraviolet light to kill pathogens in high-risk areas such as intensive care units and surgical suites.

In some cases these robots have other functions as well: on a children’s ward in Kent a floor-cleaning robot named Ella that tells jokes and sings songs as she cleans. The aim is to put a smile on the young patients’ faces while freeing up cleaners for other important tasks.

However, human cleaners are still crucial in healthcare settings because only they can perform important touch- point cleaning tasks. In fact, the cleaner’s job is particularly crucial during the Covid-19 crisis because everyone’s safety depends on the ability of staff to sanitise every surface. So, at Essity we now provide online training for cleaners to help them keep on top of the tasks in their remit.

Tork Interactive Clean Hospital Training takes operatives through various real-world scenarios, methodically detailing each step of the process from picking up debris to emptying the bins, wiping down refuse containers and

carrying out other ward-cleaning tasks. The module is available in more than 15 languages including Spanish, Arabic and Somali.

In February 2022 the Health and Social Care Secretary Sajid Javid announced plans to further harness the power of technology in healthcare. He pledged that electronic patient records were to be rolled out to 90% of trusts by December 2023 to enable NHS staff to access all relevant patient information more quickly. And he wanted to see 75% of adults in England using the NHS App by March 2024.

The use of technology in healthcare is expanding – and is here to stay. And it will undoubtedly become more sophisticated as time goes on, covering an ever-wider range of applications while helping to ensure better patient outcomes and improving cleaning and hygiene protocols.
