If you have a rat infestation in one of your buildings, the likelihood is that there is a drain defect somewhere. So, who should carry out the drain survey? Should you use your drain company or your pest control company?
After working with many rat infestations and drain companies we noticed that customers were often frustrated by the process of working with two contractors. Often the drain surveys provided by the drain specialists were focused on the drain integrity and there was less understanding of rodent behaviour.
We found that the drain surveys would not show the required information we asked for. It is important to remember that rats are incredibly adaptable, and highly mobile and it is estimated that 80% of rat activity is linked to drains defects.
Drain surveys required as a result of rat activity are much more than putting a camera in a drain and looking for defects. These surveys must be carried out by technicians with a deep knowledge of drainage systems and rodent behaviour, which includes recognising most defects which could allow rats to ingress.
Common defects include: displaced joints; open joints; redundant or insufficient capped pipework; cracks; fractures; collapsed pipes; missing brickwork or benching within the manhole.
