Hello and welcome to the May issue of Tomorrow’s FM

At the start of this month, I was lucky enough to attend ThinkFM, the flagship conference from the British Institute of Facilities Management (BIFM).

Now in its eighth year, the theme this time was: ‘Think (beyond) FM – adapt or disappear’. Hosted by Channel 4 journalist Cathy Newman, the variety of topics under the microscope included, disrupting the current trend of companies racing to the bottom when bidding for a contract, emerging analytical tools and smart applications for large property portfolios.

Subjective highlights included a fascinating case study of the world’s tallest man-made building, the Burj Khalifia, in which Fadi Al Shakhshir and Bashar Kassab talked about the new era of digital FM, and David D’Souza, Head of Engagement at CIPD, delivering a note-free presentation on the human

impact of automation. In a particularly strong message, that got right to the heart of the point, he said: “We should avoid the organisational equivalent of driving a lorry into a river because our SatNav told us to.” We were also provided glimpses into the future of IoT; Siemens Building Technologies

suggesting that it’s not unreasonable to predict a total of 20bn connected devices by the year 2020.

In this issue, we have all of our regular features alongside spotlights on the Pest Control and Summer Maintenance sectors. Elsewhere, research

from RedstoneConnect this month found that over three quarters (77%) of UK workers think the most frustrating aspect of working life in an office is booking a meeting room, with 70% feeling that the booking system is woefully inadequate. With features from Oblong and Where We Work, we

tackle some of the ways you can utilise Meeting and Conference Facilities to both the employees and company’s advantage.

Finally, we have the complete lowdown on the Facilities Show 2018 in June. With a list of exhibitors, details on what to expect and who to see, plus a timetable of keynote speakers, including Ruby Wax, Nicky Moffat and Clive Woodward, our show preview tells you everything you need to know before the big day.
