and trying to lift 200lbs. It just can’t happen. You have to work for it, manage it, and keep on trying.” Speaking from personal experience, Ruby passionately (and hilariously) expressed the need for employers to be able to spot, support and encourage those suffering with mental ill-health.
Across the rest of the show, other debates broached mental health at work. From the impact of sleep to designing for wellbeing, the future of FM and bringing wellness initiatives into business, the content at the Facilities Show 2018 truly reflected the state of the industry at present.
One debate in particular looked in depth at how workplaces can support their people. With speakers from CBRE, the sessions discussed the shifts in styles and approaches to contemporary working, and where it is expected to go. It raised important questions that the sector must still answer. What is it that employees actually want from their workplaces? How can we bridge the gap and miscommunication between employer and employee when implementing change? And how can we truly become flexible, remote workers without letting existing office spaces go to waste?
Another noteworthy presentation on wellbeing came from 3rd Pillar of Health, which looked at the importance of a good night’s sleep, and the negative impacts that sleep deprivation can have on a workforce and an individual. The session shared insightful research from a new Warwick University survey that found that 35% of the UK’s population struggle with getting adequate sleep.
Managing Director of 3rd Pillar of Health, Marcus de Guingand said: “You have to help people understand the benefits of good sleep. It’s not just about their time at work. Yes, they will be more productive, healthier, and safer, but they will also have significantly more energy for every single other aspect of their life. As an employer, you have a responsibility to encourage them to understand this.”
As always, a range of topics and industry-relevant discussions took place across the three days around the ExCeL, the show’s home for a fourth year. Namely – ‘managing the cultural shift that comes with flexible working’, a panel debate with participants from WhereWeWork, Active FM, Heritage Lottery Fund and Ricoh, and looking at the ‘workplaces of the future’ with BMA, BRE, Anabas and Active FM again.
The stand-out feature of the show was the content. While the exhibitors were diverse and sometimes impressive, the real pull for many attendees was the opportunity to learn, debate and discuss with fellow FM professionals. Yes, we could learn the majority of the content shared online without the inconvenience of having to leave our desk, but it’s clear that we still want to continue meeting, networking and discussing with likeminded people and will do for years to come.
