WORKPLACE WEEK NEW YORK

A week-long festival of workplace innovation went Stateside this summer following six years of success in the UK. Jo Sutherland, Associate Director at Magenta, reports back from a tour of New York’s most dynamic and creative workspaces.

The concept of the “workplace experience” has dominated the FM agenda over the last year or so. But what does it really mean, and where’s the science to guide facilities and workplace professionals? These questions, and a dozen others, were addressed last month as part of Workplace Week New York 2018, an philanthropic event that raised thousands of dollars for the “I Have A Dream” Foundation, New York – a charity that provides individualised social, emotional, and academic support to young people from low-income communities.

Following a successful six years in the UK, Workplace Week went Stateside this summer. The event, which is run by Advanced Workplace Associates (AWA) and supported by the IFMA Workplace Evolutionaries Group, partnered with organisations across the “Big Apple”. Neuberger Berman, Delos, Nickelodeon and Viacom were just some of the big names participating in the week to celebrate and showcase workplace innovation and creativity, proving that real estate and facilities managers have the ability to influence behaviour, health and performance.

Key opinion leaders from the likes of Ted Moudis Associates, HOK, Workplace Fabric and Allsteel participated in the week-long programme of events. Experts offered insight into how facilities professionals can link space, design and technology to drive a positive and productive workplace culture. The week also included a busy schedule of ‘working workplace’ tours across the city. High-profile organisations opened their doors for the first time in June.

As the pioneer of “Wellness Real Estate” – simply put as buildings that are designed, managed and maintained to support health and wellbeing – DELOS was one of the stand-out tours. The organisation showcased its workplace at 860 Washington Street, in the heart of New York City’s Meatpacking District.

The office, which illustrates how best practice meets the highest building certification standards, features a multifunctional lab space to process wellness data from a network of environmental sensors throughout the space, and an enhanced circadian lighting experience.
