10 QUESTIONS WITH… SCOTT COCHRANE


Each month we ask a flooring industry professional the Tomorrow’s Flooring 10 Questions. This month, we chatted to Scott Cochrane, Retail Sales Director at Karndean Designflooring.


old and new, which make this industry very interesting and certainly keeps us on our toes. I’m also particularly proud of how the industry has started to embrace social media channels such as Twitter and Facebook to enhance engagement with our customers. As a proactive social business, we’ve seen our interactions with retailers significantly increase on both platforms.


On the negative side, I believe products are too often being marketed and sold purely on price rather than on the unique qualities they offer the end user.

What was your first job? Like most people, I started


at the bottom, working in the sales department with a local home improvement company and mostly just doing what I was asked!

How did you get into the flooring industry?


Interestingly, I built up a strong relationship with the then sales manager from Karndean during his regular visits to the home improvement company I worked for at the time. I was immediately impressed with Karndean’s product portfolio and became passionate about the brand. As time progressed, I was approached to see if I would be interested in joining the family business in an external sales role, which I of course accepted. The rest is history!

What do you think the positives and negatives of the


flooring industry are? The positives have to be our customers and my peers within the industry. I can honestly say once you are in, you never want to leave. There are some fantastic retailers both large and small,

If you won the lottery, what would be the first


thing you’d buy? I would go for a luxury holiday villa. It would have to be somewhere hot and remote for the perfect family retreat.

If you could hire any one person to be part of your team,


who would it be and why? It would have to be Sir Alex Ferguson. As a true Scotsman myself, I admire his success and ‘no nonsense’ approach, as well as his ability to remain at the top of his game for a long period of time.

If you could have any super power, what would it be


and why? To see into the future, because just think of the fun you that you could have!


If you could be one person for a day, who would it be and why?


Again, sticking to the football theme, I would go with David Beckham. He’s a true professional and gentleman who has it all.

Where would you like to be a fly on the wall?


A board meeting with Sir James Dyson at Dyson Ltd HQ, so I could see what they’ve got in development.

Tomorrow’s Flooring? It would be great to see independent retailer reviews on new products being launched.

What do you think will be the biggest change in the


next five years to affect the industry? I would definitely say the need for retailers to promote their business online in order to drive traffic to their shops. Augmented Reality (AR) apps are also the next big thing. Our recently launched Karndean AR app has been a massive success with our retailers as a proactive selling tool.
