Each month we ask a cleaning industry professional the
Tomorrow’s Cleaning 10 Questions. This month, we chatted to Ian Anderson, Managing Director at ABM, All Ireland.

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB? At school I held paper rounds and did some Saturday
work in a local fruit and veg shop. My first full time job was in catering as a dishwasher and general kitchen porter.
HOW DID YOU GET INTO THE CLEANING INDUSTRY? I held a management career in the catering sector for 13
years, moved into banking for seven years, and then brought those transferable skills to the cleaning industry managing a high-profile manufacturing contract in Northern Ireland. From there I worked cross border between Northern Ireland and Republic of Ireland responsible for multiple sites, and for the past eight years have been the Managing Director of our All Ireland business.

WHICH THREE WORDS DESCRIBE YOUR PERSONALITY?
Diligent, supportive and giving.
IF YOU COULD VISIT ONE PLACE IN THE WORLD, WHERE WOULD YOU GO AND WHY?
The one place I would always return to is South Africa and the Western Cape. It's so diverse and has something for everyone.

IF AN INTERN WERE TO START TOMORROW, WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE THEM?
Don’t be frightened to ask for help, and always ensure to learn from your mistakes. Everyone makes errors or bad judgements going through life and their career will be no different. It’s so important however to understand and apply the lesson each time, to allow you to move forward and grow.

IF YOU WON THE LOTTERY TOMORROW, HOW WOULD YOU SPEND YOUR FORTUNE?
After securing my own future, I would have an absolute blast spending it on others and bringing them joy.
IF YOU COULD HOST A DINNER PARTY AND INVITE ANY PEOPLE, DEAD OR ALIVE, WHO WOULD THEY
BE AND WHY? I like a dinner party to be relaxed and fun, so definitely a younger Princess Margaret for her mischievousness, Alan Carr for his humour, and of course my husband for his exemplary hosting skills – not to mention he would likely divorce me if he wasn’t invited!
WHAT, DO YOU THINK, IS THE FUTURE OF THE CLEANING INDUSTRY?
I think the cleaning industry will develop increased regard and respect for the critical part it plays in business. A continual shift towards smart technology and AI will support key deliverables, and widely profile the impact good cleaning has, from many perspectives.
Delia Cannings, Chair of the British Cleaning Council, asks: 10 5
HOW WOULD YOU IMPROVE THE CLEANING INDUSTRY?
I’d love to see more recognition for the fantastic work the industry delivers. Equally, I’d love to see better understanding of the true ‘frontline’ nature of the job in preparing clean and safe facilities for other professions to be able to function. Cleaning is a tough job and I think business leaders should put more focus and priority towards understanding that and supporting better reward and recognition for those involved.

HOW WOULD YOU ENCOURAGE COLLEAGUES TO UNITE AND SUPPORT INDUSTRY
CAMPAIGNS DESIGNED FOR THE BETTERMENT OF ALL THE CLEANING INDUSTRY? I’m a great advocate of continuous improvement. Continuing to lead by example and demonstrating commitment to the industry through supporting our team and bettering their working environment. Also, ensure the results of the great work they’re doing is being profiled enough outside of the industry so they can reap the reward of recognition and influence others.
