Celebrating the European Cleaning & Hygiene Awards 2023 winners

After a record year for entries, the European Cleaning & Hygiene Awards returned last month to celebrate the sector’s brightest talent. Here, Michelle Marshall, founder of the event and Editor of ECJ, shares the 2023 winners.

Last month saw the return of the most anticipated event of the pan-European cleaning and hygiene calendar – the European Cleaning & Hygiene Awards.

Taking place in Dublin, the very best of the industry came together on 5 October to recognise the outstanding achievements of the sector. After some traditional Irish dancing and a delicious meal, together we celebrated the brilliant finalists and crowned those all-important winners.

We kicked off the awards ceremony with our Best Use of Smart Solutions by Service Providers category. The top prize went to Bidvest Noonan’s ‘Dynamic Cleaning Solution’, which uses real-time sensor data to eliminate unnecessary cleaning, adapt to the activity levels of buildings and contribute to reduction of energy costs.

Our second award – Investment in Training – went to Derrycourt for their Accelerate Trainee Supervisor Programme. Successfully addressing the shortage of skilled supervisors often experienced in the sector, our judges loved that the programme offers a clear career path, promoting a culture of progression and talent management.

Next up was our Commitment to Diversity award, and we were thrilled to hand the trophy over to Markas for their inclusion project. As a business, Markas firmly believes that everybody has talent and something to offer, no matter what their disability. Our judges loved how the inclusion project adapted its job descriptions and working environment to make everybody feel included.

The Excellence in Client-Contractor Relationships award is always a popular one, but there can only be one winner. This year the top prize went to FM Services for their work with OPTUM. Providing a breadth of services at this longstanding multi-site contract, FM Services has built a culture of trust, respect, openness and cooperation with OPTUM, which is great to see.

We then turned to our Start-up of the Year Award, which went to BioVate Hygienics. With a clear mission to produce cleaning products with the lowest possible impact on the planet, the judges were incredibly impressed by BioVate Hygienics’ co-founders, who are changing the pace of

30 | TOMORROW'S CLEANING sustainable change in the cleaning sector.

Our Sustainability – Best Practice award recognises those who have made a lifelong commitment to sustainable operations. Cleanology took home the trophy for their holistic approach, from the physical environments it serves to the people in the business and the communities it's part of.

We then crowned our Best Initiative Raising the Profile of the Cleaning Sector winner – Fédération des Entreprises de Propreté (FEP) – for their Cleaning Trades Week campaign. Aimed at attracting new recruits to the cleaning sector and highlighting the invaluable work of professional cleaning, the campaign included more than 100 events in over 60 cities across France, attracting widespread media coverage.

Always an exciting category, our Technological Innovation of the Year award went to TranZero this year, for the brilliant Bubble Flush. Our judges loved how Bubble Flush brings innovation to a mundane daily task – cleaning toilets – by using ultrasonic waves to remove limescale and dirt without the use of chemicals. Clever and planet-friendly.

The final two awards of the night are always special, as they recognise those stand-out individuals who go above and beyond for our sector. I was thrilled be able to present Jim Melvin of Exclusive Services Group as our Leader of the Year. Not only is Jim an inspirational, passionate and ethical leader within his own business, but he also showed outstanding leadership in the industry through his chairmanship of the British Cleaning Council (BCC).

Finally, our Rising Star – Stuart Emery of Sodexo. Stuart joined Sodexo as a student working weekends and has since risen through the business to become a Senior Cleaning Development Manager, inspiring his team with his passion and diligence.

It was fantastic to be able to shine a spotlight on the people that make the cleaning and hygiene industry so special. A huge thank you to all that entered, attended, sponsored and supported – we couldn’t have done it without you.

We’ll see you in Lisbon in 2024. www.echawards.com
