How well do you know BICSc?

In a change from his usual bimonthly update, BICSc’s Neil Spencer-Cook asks us how well we know the Institute.

The British Institute of Cleaning Science (BICSc) is a well-known name, but do you know what BICSc is all about?

Here’s the main part of the BICSc mission statement: “To raise standards of education and to build awareness of the cleaning industry through professional standards and accredited training.”

The biggest part of this is to protect the

cleaning operative and other users of the building being cleaned. So, how are we doing this?

We offer training in over 40 cleaning skills starting with the Licence to Practice (LTP) which lasts for three years, the must-have qualification for anyone working in the industry. This training can be done as standalone training, and you don’t need to be a member of BICSc.

In addition to this, we offer an accredited training qualification if you want to utilise a supervisor or manager to do your training in-house. However, if you do this, the candidate will need to be accredited by a BICSc Licensed Assessor, which we can supply for you.

The training for our most regularly requested skills is available online, and all skills can be trained in a face- to-face environment. We then offer a selection of more specialised training courses for supervisors and managers in the form of Cleanlogic courses, which are only available as an online option.

Training isn’t all we offer; we are also a membership organisation. We offer three types of membership:

1. Individual Membership

This is for any individual who has started their BICSc journey and wishes to be recognised as a supporter of the BICSc ethos and code of conduct. Anyone completing a Licence to Practice is given a complementary Individual Membership for one year.

2. Corporate Membership

This is for any company that has been trading for more than a year and wants to be recognised as a supporter of the BICSc ethos and code of conduct.

3. Accredited Training Membership (ATM) 26 | TOMORROW'S CLEANING

This is also for a company and like Corporate Membership they support the BICSc ethos and code of conduct, but in addition to this go even further with their BICSc journey and set up a training ability in-house that can train and assess their own staff. This to me is the gold standard of membership, but it comes with requirements.

An ATM – and I don’t mean a bank cash machine – must have several of their staff trained to assessor level, with a maximum of eight assessors for each ATM. Once trained, these assessors will need to be verified as up to standard, and the facility you are using for the assessing will be reviewed and checked that it is operating under the BICSc requirements. Once this is done, you will be able to train and assess.

However, this is not the end. We want you to maintain the standard going forward and as such, for you to be able to renew this membership every year, you will have a visit or Teams call to ensure that your assessors and facility are meeting the requirements for renewal. This isn’t a membership that just because you've paid your fee you can carry on; it does require a little more commitment.

If you aren’t meeting the standard, please be assured that we don’t just wash our hands of you: we work with you to make things work, helping you to achieve the standard that’s required.

For those of you who had a different idea, I hope this has clarified some of what BICSc does. There is more, but these are the overarching items. We are at the end of the phone or an email, so please call or email us if there is something else you would like to know.
