10 Questions with... Mike Osiadacz

Each month we ask a cleaning industry professional the

Tomorrow’s Cleaning 10 Questions. This month, we chatted to Mike Osiadacz, Sales Director at Matrix Cleaning Systems.

1 2

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB? Royal Naval Aircraft Engineer (Helicopter Engineer).

HOW DID YOU GET INTO THE CLEANING INDUSTRY? I spent a couple of years in South Africa in engineering

after leaving the Royal Navy. Returning in 1985, I wanted to apply my engineering skills. An opportunity came along in my home town, Cheltenham, to join Premiere Products manufacturing cleaning machines, starting my 35 years in the industry.

3 4

WHICH THREE WORDS DESCRIBE YOUR PERSONALITY?

Determined, passionate, dedicated.

IF YOU COULD VISIT ONE PLACE IN THE WORLD, WHERE WOULD YOU GO AND WHY?

Having worked briefly in New Zealand, its top of the list. The scenery is just breath-taking and I just need to see more.

7

IF YOU WON THE LOTTERY TOMORROW, HOW WOULD YOU SPEND YOUR FORTUNE?

I would retire immediately: as they say, life is too short and there are so many wonderful things that I would like to experience and you need to do that while still fit, healthy and active. Ensure that all my immediate family are cared for financially, locate to a larger country property with land for leisure pursuits, travel as often as I possibly can to exotic islands such as the Maldives, and relax.

8 9

IF YOU COULD HOST A DINNER PARTY AND INVITE ANY THREE PEOPLE, DEAD OR ALIVE, WHO WOULD

THEY BE AND WHY? George Best would bring wonderful stories of his career on and off the field, Billy Connolly because he would bring an evening of laughter, and Rod Steward to finish the evening off with some of the best songs ever recorded; all have been an influence in my life.

WHAT, DO YOU THINK, IS THE FUTURE OF THE CLEANING INDUSTRY?

We’ve already started to see the innovation of robotic floor cleaning machines and, in the healthcare sector, robotic disinfection systems. In addition, many more battery- operated machines including vacuums and scrubbing machines – these are here to stay as the machinery becomes more ergonomic and user-friendly. More and more environmentally friendly cleaning chemicals and paper products will continue to be developed as they are in demand by the cleaning industry.

Trudi Osborne, Marketing Manager at Airdri, asks: 10 5

HOW WOULD YOU IMPROVE THE CLEANING INDUSTRY?

I would like to see stricter control and higher standards set for washroom hygiene: these are high risk areas and should be more controlled by environmental health.

6

IF AN INTERN WERE TO START TOMORROW, WHAT’S THE ONE PIECE OF ADVICE YOU WOULD

GIVE THEM? Always spend time listening to what the customer needs and offer a complete solution, and never let the word 'no' prevent you from achieving your goal.

HOW CAN THE CLEANING AND HYGIENE INDUSTRY COLLECTIVELY CONTRIBUTE TO

ADDRESSING CLIMATE CHANGE, PARTICULARLY ENERGY REDUCTION, AND PROMOTE THE IMPORTANCE OF THE ISSUE TO THE WIDER MARKET? One of the key areas where the industry can contribute is vehicle emissions: we all have to get from A to B, whether we’re in sales, operations, support or service. Electric vehicles would dramatically reduce emissions globally, setting a cleaner, more efficient example for other industries.
