Sustainable innovation

Providing innovative, sustainable solutions in healthcare washrooms is vital, says Kimberly-Clark Professional.

We all know that paper hand towels are a must for Infection Control in healthcare environments. Infection Control guidelines specify the usage of disposable paper towels in clinical areas for very good reason.

The World Health Organization recommend single-use paper towels as the most hygienic hand drying method. The rubbing process of paper towels physically removes bacteria along with moisture, and paper towels reduce bacteria on fingers by up to 76%. Hands left damp are 1000 times more likely to spread bacteria than dry hands, so providing good quality paper towels is a must.

However, despite the importance of paper towels, we must be environmentally responsible with the choice of paper consumables in hospitals and clinics. This means several things: choosing a manufacturer with responsible sourcing of raw materials; giving consideration for minimising deliveries and transportation of paper products; selecting products that are designed for controlled usage so that just the right amount of product is used without waste; and forward-thinking about the recycling of products.

Healthcare trusts across the UK have a remit to meet sustainability targets and Kimberly-Clark Professional provide a range of washroom products that can help achieve those goals.

Rolled hand towel is leading the way as the paper hand towel format that allows for high capacity, efficient hand drying in busy healthcare environments – helping to achieve sustainability targets. The controlled, single sheet dispensing means fewer sheets are used, reducing waste. The sheets are also presented open and flat which ensures efficient use of each towel – again meaning less paper waste.

New compression technology used in the Scott Control Rolled Hand Towel gives an 18% reduction in storage and transportation, meaning fewer deliveries are required. They’re also produced with Airflex Technology which uses 17% less pulp fibre in production, yet provides a paper towel with superior absorbency and softness. And the Scott Control Rolled Hand Towel is FSC Certified for added environmental assurance.

What about toilet tissue? Uncontrolled dispensing can lead to overuse. Jumbo rolls that freely dispense, allow people to use much more toilet tissue than is necessary, leading to waste.

Choosing the centrefeed format for toilet tissue allows for high capacity, controlled use in busy healthcare environments – helping to achieve sustainability targets.

“Hands left damp are 1000 times more likely to spread bacteria

than dry hands, so providing good quality paper towels is a must.”

Controlled single sheet dispensing ensures people only take what’s required and waste less. The centrefeed system is fully enclosed, offering the most hygienic format of toilet tissue. Scott Control Centrefeed Toilet Tissue offers the longest roll on the market, and it is 100% recycled and FSC Certified.

It’s not just paper products that can help drive sustainability in the washroom. Foam hand cleansers are leading the way as the soap format that allows for more efficient usage in busy healthcare environments. Foam format provides twice as many washes per litre than liquid soap, and rinses off quicker than traditional soap, resulting in up to 40% less water usage. The Scott Control Foam Hand Cleanser is provided in a fully recyclable cassette and the dispenser system provides controlled foam shots to reduce waste.

The washroom shouldn’t be overlooked in helping to achieve sustainability targets for your business.
