A compostable cleaning solution

Stein Bongers, Product Manager Wipes EMEIA at Berry Global, highlights the benefits of innovative and sustainable cleaning solutions that can benefit the food service sector.

Whether you’re involved in contract cleaning, the retail, hotel or leisure industry, healthcare, manufacturing or education sectors, hygiene and cleanliness is an essential part of maintaining health, productivity and service levels.

A strong focus on a clean establishment is not only key in making a good first impression, but also guarantees quality, safety, and better resource and waste management, particularly when it comes to the food service sector.

With increased scrutiny within the sector and regulatory bodies demanding stricter regulations, many companies in the food service sector are increasingly realising how critical it is to adopt the right tools and practices, creating sustainable products, improving resource efficiency, whilst minimising environmental impact. The one critical area that is often overlooked is cleaning.

Traditional cleaning products are typically costly, inefficient, leave residues on work surfaces, and can adversely affect, both the food quality and the environment. This is why single-use compostable and biodegradable wipes have been developed.

Innovative product development

Tea towels that are commonly used to wipe hands or work surfaces are suitable for drying, but they have no actual cleaning properties, and are not certified to be in contact with food. Also, tea towels are generally made from resource-intensive cotton – in fact, according to the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), it takes in excess of 20,000L of water to produce 1kg of cotton.

Conversely, nonwoven wipes are actually more versatile and suitable for a wide range of cleaning applications. However, these wipes are traditionally made from non-renewable synthetic fibres such as polyester and polypropylene, making waste management an issue.

With their sights set on developing a pioneering method to provide sustainable yet convenient cleaning options, Chicopee, a brand of Berry Global, has reimagined nonwoven wipes. Its J-Cloth Biodegradable and Compostable is Food Contact Clearance (FCC) approved, compostable (in accordance with the DIN EN13432:2000-12 directive) and biodegradable, making it perfect for the food service industry – not to mention a solution that stands out from the competition.

The benefit of biodegradation is that it’s a naturally occurring breakdown process of materials by

microorganisms (bacteria, fungi or other biological activity), while composting is a natural but human-driven process. Essentially, composting is an accelerated biodegradation process which occurs in optimised conditions.

Compostable products present several benefits. They minimise the amount of waste sent to landfill, the materials used don’t produce toxins as they deteriorate, and they contribute to environmentally friendly waste management as they can be composted in industrial composting facilities alongside food waste. Disposing of the wipes in the appropriate bin avoids littering and contributes to a sustainable, circular economy.

In keeping with Chicopee’s commitment to sustainability, its packaging is also environmentally friendly. The wipes come in a biodegradable and compostable polybag, packed in a recyclable outer carton made from Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified materials.

Reducing risks, raising reliability

Re-usable cloths might appear to be more convenient, affordable and environmentally friendly than single-use disposables, but there’s a high risk of harmful substances and pathogens transferring from one surface to another via seemingly clean cloths.

These FCC approved single-use wipes – made from PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification) certified natural biodegradable viscose fibres – provide consistent, predictable results. This eliminates the risk of losing effectiveness through structural breakdown or contaminant retention as the result of ineffective laundering.

By using innovative cleaning solutions designed to support sustainability and safety, food service industry companies can minimise their environmental impact, reduce contamination risks and satisfy stringent consumer and government regulations.
