Staying safe with steam


Daniel Took, Head of Professional Product Marketing at Kärcher UK, explores one of the most effective methods for ensuring hygienic food preparation: steam.


Making sure that surfaces are clean and sanitised is a must in the food processing industry to avoid food contamination. Whilst detergents are ideal at achieving this, unwanted residue can cause food to spoil. To overcome this, steam cleaning offers a highly effective and efficient solution without the need for chemicals.


The heat produced by steam cleaners can instantly kill harmful pathogens as the water is heated past the boiling point to produce steam. The pressurised steam comes through the nozzle where it meets the surface to loosen dirt. Due to the high temperatures, up to 99.999% of germs and bacteria are eliminated in the process, making it an ideal solution for the food industry.

Cleaning floors

When the steam releases the unwanted surface residue, it is broken down into liquid form due to the high temperature and conversion of steam to water. These liquids can then be mopped up using the cloth for an effective all round clean.


Cleaning crevices


Whether it’s gaps in the floor or gaps between equipment, crevices and hard to reach places are often overlooked when it comes to cleaning. The point jet nozzle available for the SG 4/4 enables the user to access these areas by directing the steam into one singular point. Acting as a funnel, the steam can penetrate the gaps and remove unwanted surface materials.


Cleaning cooking equipment


Large scale cleaning equipment such as grill pans can harbour unwanted particles that build up over time. Using a hand tool alongside a terry cloth cover allows for the effective cleaning of the surface and the elimination of unwanted bacteria. The hand tool allows the user to easily tackle dirt build-up for an effective clean.
