Making 2022 the year of innovation

As we ring in the New Year, Jan Hein Hemke, Managing Director at Kingdom Cleaning, reflects on 2021 and shares his thoughts on the trends that will shape the cleaning and hygiene industry in 2022.

It’s safe to say that 2021 didn’t quite turn out as we had hoped. We started the year in lockdown and ended it with another new variant of COVID-19 circulating. As we welcome in 2022, we have to hope this will be the year that we get the upper hand on COVID-19.

Throughout the pandemic, cleaning and hygiene have remained one of the first lines of defence against coronavirus. Over the past two years, we’ve learnt a lot about the virus and in turn, the services we’ve delivered have evolved significantly.

At the height of the pandemic last winter, deep cleans and fogging were in huge demand and, for sectors remaining open for workers and the public, heightened cleaning regimes were also adopted. Daily cleans were extended and touchpoint sanitisation went from daily to hourly in some environments.

Today, as we accept that we’ll be living alongside COVID for many years to come, our efforts have become much more sustainable. We’ve shifted away from ‘panic cleaning’ and people are investing in new products and technologies born out of the health crisis.

Of course, regular cleaning and touchpoint sanitisation still have a place, and probably always will, but there’s now growing demand for products and processes offering sustained and measurable levels of protection.

Investing in innovation

Cleaning will continue to be a vital weapon in our fight against COVID in 2022, but it will be smarter and more efficient than ever before.

Using data as our guide, we will be able to test cleanliness levels, bolster cleaning regimes and continuously improve results. By measuring hygiene levels before and after cleans, we can start to build a bigger picture to shape our processes.

One of the best data pools for our industry can be gathered with Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP) testing. ATP is the energy molecule found in all living things, making it the ideal indicator when trying to determine if a surface is clean or not.

Using this method, small testing sticks take a sample from a surface before and after cleaning. It’s then placed into a small handheld device and a reading is given

within seconds, demonstrating the effectiveness of the sanitisation cleaning. From these readings, we can get a real feel for hotspots and problem areas, allowing us to tweak and bolster processes for future cleans. Through continuous testing we can check these adjustments are working, with the ultimate aim of creating tailored cleaning regimes that deliver proven results.

ATP testing not only enables operatives to constantly improve cleaning methods, but it also provides clients with reassurance that their premises have been serviced to the highest levels possible.

Staying one step ahead, we will also continue investing in new technology, which will play a vital role in future cleaning. We’re currently trialling a new system using cameras and integrated software that automatically analyses the cleanliness and usage of surrounding areas to identify what cleaning measures need to take place and when – something that hasn’t been done before.

Protecting our customers

We also expect surface protectors and anti-microbial shields to become commonplace in 2022. These products offer active protection against bacteria and pathogens by leaving behind a mono-molecular layer which permanently bonds to the surface, forming a protective barrier. They can be sprayed onto a surface after cleaning and can provide long-lasting protection for weeks.

This ensures daily cleans are given significant protection against reinfection, providing a longer-term solution for infection control.

A positive outlook

Without a doubt it’s been another incredibly challenging year, but with a world-leading vaccination programme underway and more sophisticated cleaning products and procedures in our arsenal, we’re ready to take on 2022 and make it a happy and healthy year for all.
