Thrills and spills

Joanne Gilliard, CEO at Jangro, advises on how to keep on top of busy festive schedules. Welcoming washrooms

It is a time for joy and merriment, but the festive season is also synonymous with stress. Indeed, it’s one of the busiest times of the year, particularly for the hospitality and catering sector, whose bars, restaurants and hotels host annual Christmas dos, dinners and parties, throughout the day and night during December.

Whilst a full cover count at your restaurant is great for business, it also results in an array of messes, soils and spills which must be cleaned up ready for subsequent guests. The volume and frequency of cleaning required during this busy month is high, so detailed planning and effective supervision is vital to ensure cleaning staff stay on top of their schedules.

Make a plan

If you haven’t done so already, form a plan and communicate it so that supervisors and cleaning staff know exactly what is expected. Operatives’ checklists should be amended to incorporate additional tasks. Consider whether their workloads are realistic and manageable. If not, then there's value in taking steps to provide them with support.

For example, recruiting seasonal staff can help alleviate the burden. Temporarily omitting tasks or moving them around on certain days to accommodate the heavier schedules can also be a good way to lighten the load – so long as cleaning standards and guest experiences are not negatively affected.

Stubborn soils

Festive cleaning is not as simple as sweeping up the tinsel, paper hats and remnants of pulled crackers left over from the Christmas celebrations. Unsightly spills and persistent blotches will also need to be cleaned, so think about the type of soils that are likely to occur. Common offenders at this time of year include red wine, gravy, cranberry sauce and even candle wax – all stubborn stains. Ensure you have the right equipment and cleaning solutions to remove them easily and effectively.

26 | TOMORROW'S CLEANING

It’s not only an establishment’s dining and bar area that needs regular cleaning. Just as these businesses see higher than usual footfall, so too will their washroom facilities. Incorporate frequent monitoring into operatives’ schedules to ensure that soap dispensers, toilet tissue and paper hand towels do not run empty, and that the space is kept clean and hygienic.

Prevent dirt from entering

The old adage ‘prevention is better than cure’ is apt here. By reducing the amount of dirt and grime from entering in the first place, there will be less cleaning required. Consider installing an effective barrier matting system, which can prevent an estimated 90% of soil from entering the building. An air-shower at the entrance will also prevent soil from getting inside by producing a powerful but comfortable downward draught that dislodges any loose soil particles from people’s clothes. These are forced downwards towards the floor, where they can then be trapped and contained within the fibres of the barrier mats.

A trusted partner

Don’t get caught short by running out of essentials. Ensure you have ample supplies of effective cleaning detergents, solutions and washroom dispenser refills. Partnering with a trusted supplier like Jangro can quickly help should the worst happen.
