Add labels to high-intensity touchpoints to remind building users to wash their hands or use anti-bac gel after being in a high-risk area, and remind cleaning teams that a deep clean is required at those points. Sanitation stations can be placed around some of the high-risk touchpoints to make it as easy as possible for occupants to clean their hands immediately after coming into contact with a high- risk touchpoint.

As much as a thorough cleaning regime can accomplish, we need buy in and behavioural change from building users to truly combat the virus. Signage is a great way to reinforce messages and encourage this change.

Positive communication

Signage is one part of a communications strategy. Each building user will have their own concerns and questions, so communications need to be clear, consistent and encourage feedback.

Business leaders must share updates to building protocols with their employees, and explain why they are in place. This is crucial – clarifying why something is being done adds a

lot more weight than simply saying what is being done.

Acknowledge the challenges that everyone is facing and make sure to regularly thank employees and customers for adapting during these difficult times.

Independent certification

Working with an independent specialist provides an added layer of reassurance to building occupants. Pre-COVID, we tended to judge cleaning on a visual basis, and so long as things looked clean that was good enough.

Now, people expect better but that can be hard to evidence. Attaining independent certification of hygiene standards will show that a business is working with experts to keep the workplace safe. Certification should be displayed prominently throughout the building.

We’re staying on top of the latest Government guidelines to make adjustments to our workplace hygiene programme. Though the lockdown may have eased for now, until a vaccine is found workplace hygiene will be at the top of the agenda for businesses, so it’s never too late to implement a hygiene programme.
