Paul Mulready, Marketing Manager at Northwood Hygiene Products Ltd, reminds us how holiday traffic doesn’t just affect the roads: it can impact washrooms too!

As the main summer holiday season is in full swing, it’s easy to forget the importance of the away from home (AfH) washroom in making sure the holiday goes well.

With the established fact that hands are the prime cause of spreading bacterial infection, it is important that AfH washrooms can continue to provide the hygiene levels necessary to give users every chance of avoiding the unpleasant consequences of poor hand hygiene that can ruin a holiday break.

Motorway service areas, restaurants, pubs, cafes, caravan and camping parks all experience a change in their usual washroom usage patterns, with greater numbers and  The increase in the number of people using the facility is easily understood, with families travelling to holiday destinations during the school holidays.

For some members of both groups a lack of familiarity with the situation and their differing requirements in terms of assistance can lengthen the average amount of time being spent using the washroom.

The consequence is that this can mean that as time delays mount, subsequent queues inevitably develop, which in turn can quickly lead to the temptation to rush through everything in order to regain a coach seat, or mollify an impatient parent driver.

The answer to this perfectly understandable problem is not so far different from the more predictable times of the year.

They  at all times and they must be easy to monitor, allowing maintenance staff the opportunity to maintain stocking levels which allows that continuous supply to meet peak demand requirements.

“Dispensers must be robust to

withstand high usage and occasional abuse, so that they are rarely broken and so out of action.”

At the same time they must be easy to clean to allow the facility to not only be hygienic, but also look clean as well, encouraging user co-operation to keep the washroom tidy. All this needs to be achieved with a minimum number of maintenance visits to keep the operatives’ costs down.

Single sheet dispensing helps reduce wastage and excessive usage, which of course is an additional important contributor to delivering exceptional cost-in-use performance.

Northwood's Leonardo Dispensing Systems have been long recognised as one of the leaders in the provision of  cope with these fluctuating situations, helping to encourage washroom users to maintain hand hygiene standards. Indeed, for many years a large number of motorway service areas have installed and continue to use Leonardo Dispensing Systems.

Reliable and exceptionally well resourced, the Leonardo range encompasses a flexibility which allows the easy positioning of dispensers in locations where there is demand for wall space from promotional posters and other dispensing machines.

Maintenance staff have appreciated the single, simple, but strong key-operated locks which help reduce the time taken 

Of course, neither Northwood nor the washroom facilitators  to reduce the effects of bacterial transference, but with insights gained from experience, they can at least provide a service that allows the opportunity to do so and which can be reputation enhancing rather than damaging – irate coach drivers and harassed parents notwithstanding.
