UNDER A BLUE MOON

Sean Roberts, Head of Operations – North Destinations and Venues for OCS Group UK & Ireland, explains how OCS strives to maintain the world-class facilities at the prestigious Manchester City Football Club.

Football has been having quite the year. The 2018 FIFA World Cup took place in a total of 12 venues scattered across Russia’s urban hotspots – each undoubtedly with their own trials for the FMs servicing them. We’ve barely caught our breath from incessantly chanting ‘it’s coming home’, and now our attentions can turn to the start of the Premier League season.

At the forefront of the Premier League is, of course, 2017/18 champions Manchester City Football Club (MCFC). OCS Group was awarded a three-year contract by the holding company for the Club – City Football Group (CFG) – in 2015. The contract includes a range of core soft services including cleaning, pest control, hygiene, window cleaning and waste management. The agreement kicked off in January 2016 and covers much of the Etihad Campus – including the iconic Etihad Stadium, the City Football Academy (CFA), and CFG’s 

Arena, and Kia Oval in our remit, and more than a decade’s experience under our belts. That said, football stadiums present their own unique challenges.

Football is incredibly personal, and I’d argue that no other venue type has such an emotional resonance, nor cultural importance, as a local football stadium. Add to this the competitive nature between rival clubs – not just on the pitch, but the club as a whole (venue included) – expectations and standards are incredibly high. MCFC was formed as a community project in 1880 and, as such, local engagement and community underpins everything for the club, and it understandably wants to have its best foot forward when fans of rival teams visit the stadium for an away game.

Another challenge to take into consideration is that venues such as the Etihad don’t just have the football season on their calendars. Most double up as huge music venues, playing host to some of the biggest music stars in the world on their global arena tours – the Etihad most recently saw Ed Sheeran and Taylor Swift take to the stage.
