CFA stadium venues, a considerable number of matches take place throughout the course of the year, as well as daily stadium tours, which staff take in to consideration by frequently cleaning and checking the tour’s planned route.

Facilities at the Etihad stadium include a kitchen providing up to 6,000 meals on match days across six restaurants, players’ lounge, conference suites, numerous bars and press rooms. Premium hospitality areas such as ‘The Tunnel Club’ have a dedicated team of four operatives and a supervisor, each having completed a WorldHost principles of customer service training course so that patrons receive 

“No venue type has such an emotional resonance, nor

cultural importance, as a local football stadium.”

Apart from our core services team, we also have a logistics team. The logistics team will oversee the coordination of these areas, as well as other responsibilities on and off match days including removing camera pit covers and pitch side barriers.

THE CHALLENGE With these elements in mind, the service delivery at MCFC must be flexible and executed with military-like precision. When OCS was brought on board, we had one main objective: to raise standards across the whole campus.

Our approach involved replacing the existing disparate teams with a consolidated facilities management team responsible for coordinating all support staff and services, reporting directly to OCS’s Contracts Manager, Etihad Stadium Manager, and the CFA’s own Estates Manager. We adopted MCFC’s existing CAFM system and collated all supplier information into the database. Once completed, we continued to benchmark suppliers to ensure best value for CFG, and bring sub-contractors in-house where feasible.

For sporting events or concerts, the venue sees a heavy footfall from the public for very brief periods – the Etihad’s maximum capacity is 55,000 people. For a home football match, a team of about 30 operatives split into eight teams, each allocated a section of the site, always with a male and female member of staff on each for the provision of cleaning the toilets.

These operatives will complete a full clean and waste removal service at both stadiums before, during, and within 

Music concerts take a bit more consideration. The football pitch is covered and becomes the standing area for the concert venue, increasing the venue capacity by almost 10,000 people. Whether or not the pitch is used as standing or seating space is at the discretion of the concert promoter for each artist. This uplift in footfall not only increases the amount of waste in the rubbish bins and littered around the site, but also the use of the toilet facilities.

Post-concert, toilets will need a thorough deep clean. And, without a half time period, cleaning must be completed en masse after the concert. The night team works a 22:00 to 10:00 shift, and if there is another event scheduled the following morning, the pressure is on for a quick turnaround.

Elements such as pest control and waste management take on new meaning for large outdoor venues such as football stadiums. For the former, the open-air architecture is a haven for bird life to build their nests inside the roof structure – not necessarily a problem, until droppings begin to fall onto the unsuspecting heads of spectators below. In the case of the latter, OCS’s waste management strategy across all  as sustainably as possible. In 2017 a total of 1025 tonnes of waste was removed from the Manchester City campus including the Etihad and CFA sites. By separating waste at the source, recyclables are sent to the nearest recycling facilities and all that’s left heads to the closest waste-to- energy site available.

OCS now delivers a total of 10 services across the Etihad Campus, and as MCFC look to retain their Premier League title over the coming months, it’s more of the same from us.
