Chicopee investigates how new high-tech cleaning materials can offer superior performance and remain environmentally friendly.


The UK’s restaurant industry enjoyed a turnover of more than £40bn last year, with Coventry, Edinburgh, Sunderland and York all reporting impressive growth – more so than London, which saw turnover rise by 7%, according to 


Among the trends emerging from this burgeoning scene is that of sustainability, with consumers shunning GM ingredients in favour of locally sourced produce without the ‘air miles’ of imported goods.


In fact, this is one trend that extends beyond the plate. Today’s discerning diners expect sustainable cleaning practices as well as ingredients. Harsh chemicals and methods that use too much water are as unwelcome as large amounts of food waste. Conventional cleaning products do not break down and ultimately pollute the air and water, plus of course a ‘just- bleached’ smell doesn’t exactly whet the appetite.


With this in mind, environmentally conscious restaurants, bars and hotels are swapping traditional cleaning products for greener alternatives.


But can sustainable products achieve the same level of hygiene that their chemical-based cousins can? James Taylor, Marketing Director for EMEIA (Specialities) at Chicopee, says the answer is a resounding yes.


He commented: “Many outlets are turning to technologically advanced cleaning materials as an alternative to harsh   microbes without the use of a single chemical.


“Not only that, the cloth is disposable so rather than risk spreading germs onto the next surface to be cleaned, it is simply thrown away after use.”


The same technology can now be used in floorcare.   can be removed from the floor of a hotel lobby or restaurant without the need for gallons of water or the use of chemicals.

Composting is a great step for an outlet to take towards reducing greenhouse gases and food waste. The cloth can be simply rinsed then added to a kitchen’s food waste bin or compost area where it will break down completely.
