10 Questions with... Peter Buff

Each month we ask a cleaning industry professional the

Tomorrow’s Cleaning 10 Questions. This month, we chatted to Peter Buff, Managing Director at Kingdom Cleaning.

1

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB? My first job was landscaping at a local community

college. I was in a rock band at the time and it worked perfectly because it fit around my gigs on evenings and weekends, and paid just enough to fuel up the van and get a few rounds of beers afterwards.

2

HOW DID YOU GET INTO THE CLEANING INDUSTRY? After graduating University with a degree in Philosophy, I

worked as a management consultant providing outsourcing advisory services. Years later I took a business development role with a large FM company, which naturally led me into the cleaning sector in 2018 when I joined Facilicom UK. The business is now part of Kingdom Services Group and I was delighted to be promoted to Managing Director for Kingdom Cleaning earlier this year.

3 4

WHICH THREE WORDS DESCRIBE YOUR PERSONALITY?

Empathetic, curious, and imaginative.

IF YOU COULD VISIT ONE PLACE IN THE WORLD, WHERE WOULD YOU GO AND WHY?

As an avid skier, I would have to say a trip to Jackson Hole to tackle Corbet’s Couloir.

6 7

IF AN INTERN WERE TO START TOMORROW, WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE THEM?

Be confident in your perspectives, and honour your talents through hard work.

IF YOU WON THE LOTTERY TOMORROW, HOW WOULD YOU SPEND YOUR FORTUNE?

Undoubtedly the family would have a list significant enough to take a dent out of my winnings, and of course I would start there. With whatever scraps remain, I would look to upgrade my turntable and spend the rest on obscure vinyl recordings that only a few really care about.

8 9

IF YOU COULD HOST A DINNER PARTY AND INVITE ANY PEOPLE, DEAD OR ALIVE, WHO WOULD THEY

BE AND WHY? Mark E. Smith for his wit, St Ignatius Loyola for his inspiration, and my wife for her laughter.

WHAT, DO YOU THINK, IS THE FUTURE OF THE CLEANING INDUSTRY?

I think we have a hopeful future where the importance of our work is better understood and respected. I also think that, despite an increase in hybrid working, workplaces will have an even more important role to play, meaning that there will always be a job for our workforce to keep these environments safe and welcoming.

Ian Knowles, UK and Ireland Sales Manager at Legend Brands Europe, asks:

HOW WOULD YOU IMPROVE THE CLEANING INDUSTRY?

Providing skills development and creating viable career pathways throughout the entirety of my organisation is something I am very passionate about. Our industry employs people with a wide breadth and diversity of talent, and as leaders we have a responsibility to stand up for and invest in our workforce.

WE NEED TO BRING QUALITY LEVELS UP AND IMPROVE STANDARDS IN THE CLEANING

INDUSTRY: HOW BEST DO YOU THINK THIS CAN BE ACHIEVED? People outside our industry often link standards to the level of effort our workforce is willing and able to exert. There’s always more to be done to make our services efficient, but lasting and dependable standards come from clients who invest in their facilities and providers who prove their return through the great people we employ every day.
