Safe and effective retail cleaning routines

Daniel Took, Head of Professional Product Marketing at Kärcher UK, explains how facilities managers should safeguard retail destinations through effective cleaning to provide the optimum consumer experience.

Ensuring retail stores and shopping centres are cleaned to a high standard not only enhances the overall perception of the centre, but also ensures a safe environment for users. From collecting rubbish with regular litter picks, to enhanced cleaning measures being applied to eliminate dirt build-up, making sure the right measures are in place will enable staff to clean at a faster and more consistent rate.

Depending on the size of the centre or the store, the equipment that’s required to maintain the retail destination will vary. For example, when cleaning flooring, the size of the space will dictate which machine should be used. Smaller gangways and store aisles can be best cleaned using walk-behind scrubber dryers due to the increased manoeuvrability that they offer. Larger open spaces and display areas however, require ride-on scrubber dryers due to their increased on-board tank size, allowing users to clean larger spaces in one go without the need to stop.

Understanding when to use the right machine will go a long way to supporting an effective cleaning routine. However, machines alone will not allow facilities managers to tackle unwanted dirt build-up. Utilising an effective cleaning routine will greatly improve cleaning efficiency by reducing the time spent deep cleaning and ensuring that daily cleaning is done in an effective manner.

For stores and centres of all sizes, the PDIR (Preventative, Daily, Interim and Restorative) cleaning process will enable facilities managers to get on top of dirt build-up by taking an outwards in approach.

Preventative cleaning

Preventative cleaning focuses on stopping the dirt from outside making its way into the shopping centre where it gathers on walkways and around store entrances. Focusing outside-in can reduce the build-up of dirt inside by two thirds, due to the transfer of dirt particles from shoppers into the stores. Footpaths that lead consumers through shopping centres and along high streets are prone to dirt build-up due to the vast numbers of people that travel along the thoroughfares daily.

30 | RETAIL & DAYTIME CLEANING

When it comes to tackling outside spaces, walk-behind vacuum sweepers target dirt from the source. The robust brushes on the vacuum sweepers allow users to get close to surfaces such as kerbs and walls, helping to extract dirt particles that could later be transferred into the facility.

Daily maintenance cleaning

Daily floorcare maintenance is key to ensuring that surfaces remain safe for public use. For efficient cleaning, a scrubber dryer should be used as this will thoroughly remove loosened dirt in a single pass, leaving surfaces instantly dry, clean, and safe to prevent trips and falls. With large on-board tanks, scrubber dryers allow users to easily clean wide-open spaces without the need to refill for fresh water.

Intermediate cleaning

Whilst daily cleaning will tackle surface level dirt, it’s important to ensure that intermediate cleaning is also factored into the cleaning routine. Intermediate cleaning will involve more intensive cleaning measures, such as polishing flooring. Due to the nature of the work, spaces may need to be closed off to ensure shopper safety. As a result, it’s important to dedicate time to Preventative and Daily cleaning to reduce disruption.

Restoring the original condition

Surfaces can become damaged due to the movement of people, so it’s important to restore them if they do become damaged. Making use of deep cleaning agents alongside equipment such as scrubber dryers can allow facilities management teams to remove care films, wax and polymer coatings, dirt, and grease, to recoat and treat flooring so that it returns to a ‘like new’ state.

Making use of effective cleaning measures such as the PDIR cleaning process will boost cleaning efficiency and productivity, helping to support the overall consumer experience whilst visiting different shopping centres and retail stores. Using innovative cleaning solutions and the latest in cleaning technology will go a long way to ensuring that everyone who visits has a great shopping experience.
