10 QUESTIONS

10 Questions with... Mark Hewlett

Each month we ask a cleaning industry professional the

Tomorrow’s Cleaning 10 Questions. This month, we chatted to Mark Hewlett, Global CEO at 2San.

1 2

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB? My very first job was delivering newspapers at the age of 11.

HOW DID YOU GET INTO THE CLEANING INDUSTRY? I joined 2San in Spring 2022, having previously been

Chief Operating Officer at the UKHealth Security Agency. In early 2023, 2San acquired a business in the cleaning sector because we saw massive potential in sustainable, safe cleaning products and methods.

3 4

WHICH THREE WORDS DESCRIBE YOUR PERSONALITY?

Driven. Growth. Competitive.

IF YOU COULD VISIT ONE PLACE IN THE WORLD, WHERE WOULD YOU GO AND WHY?

I have always wanted to visit the Himalayan and Karakoram mountains, as the scenery looks breathtaking.

7

IF YOU WON THE LOTTERY TOMORROW, HOW WOULD YOU SPEND YOUR FORTUNE?

Beyond a few material treats and possessions, I’d set up an investment fund to support small businesses with amazingly smart ideas that are close to what I believe in. Ideally, I’d personally benefit from their growth – but importantly, so would the businesses and so would society.

8

IF YOU COULD HOST A DINNER PARTY AND INVITE ANY PEOPLE, DEAD OR ALIVE, WHO WOULD THEY

BE AND WHY? Steve Jobs, Edward the First and Ayn Rand.

I’m a massive fan of Steve Jobs and would love to listen to him talk openly about his experiences at Apple, and how he created ideas and products that have outlasted him.

Edward the First is my favourite English monarch, and demonstrated what it meant to lead from the front with charisma, courage and sheer bloody-mindedness. He was a master strategist both at home and abroad, and was feared and admired by friends and enemies alike. He’d make for brilliant company and I think Steve and he would get on like a house on fire.

I absolutely love Rand’s novels The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged. Her writing resonates strongly with me and I believe she would stimulate rich conversation with both Edward and Steve.

9 5

HOW WOULD YOU IMPROVE THE CLEANING INDUSTRY?

The current plight of our waterways, river systems and delicate ecosystems is a burning platform for change. Shifting our focus to more sustainable and environmentally friendly cleaning options is hugely important. Alongside this, the role the sector plays in maintaining the public’s health isn’t visible enough. Awareness needs to be broadened around the benefits of high standards of cleanliness provided by the industry in controlling disease outbreaks.

6

IF AN INTERN WERE TO START TOMORROW, WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE THEM?

Build a network, find a mentor and open your mind to learning and developing relentlessly.

62 | TOMORROW'S CLEANING

WHAT, DO YOU THINK, IS THE FUTURE OF THE CLEANING INDUSTRY?

The words: safer, sustainable and visible. Werner du Plessis, Managing Director at Rawlins, asks:

10

WHAT IS THE ONE MISTAKE YOU NOTICE OUR INDUSTRY IS MAKING MORE THAN OTHERS?

I always see cleaners on the fringes and peripheries of business and society. They clean the streets and go unnoticed, they hoover the office and no one says hello, they pick up litter in train stations and no one says thanks. Why isn’t the industry doing more to promote the importance of the people who make it tick? This is a mistake, as other industries promote their people and the important role they play in society much more than the cleaning industry does.
