SUSTAINABILITY A holistic approach to green cleaning

James Law, Commercial Director at 2Pure Products, discusses how the cleaning industry can play a vital role in reducing environmental impact as the country works towards achieving its ambitious net zero goals.

Going green has never been more important. From the ambitious carbon reduction targets set by the government to the sustainability pledges made by major companies, it’s crystal clear that every single person and organisation has a role to play when it comes to taking care of our planet.

However, with recent reports suggesting that we’re not on track to achieve government goals, more needs to be done to bolster our efforts. This will require a major behaviour shift, considering every product and process we use.

Going holistic

When it comes to the cleaning and hygiene sector, sustainability should be front of mind for manufacturers, distributors and end users. After all, ‘going green’ is now a major influence on any purchasing decision, as clients demand effective products that are also kind to the planet.

Customers look to us as manufacturers and distributors to guide them in making the right choices for carbon reduction, but when it comes to sustainable cleaning, it’s important to make sure we’re not simply greenwashing. These commitments must be effective and meaningful. This is why it’s vital that we put sustainability at the heart of operations, considering the whole lifecycle of the product, process, and practice.

Key considerations

In recent years, we’ve seen a huge increase in the availability of so-called ‘eco’ cleaning products on the market, but what are the most important considerations when selecting the right one for you? It’s vital that you look at the raw ingredients of any cleaner you’re choosing and make sure that they are safe both for people and the environment.

You should also look at the packaging. What are the bottles and packaging are made from? Are they made from 100% recycled plastic or cardboard?

Another point to be aware of is how the supplier is transporting the goods for delivery. Are they offsetting the carbon generated from this activity? Do they offer to support customers’ own sustainability targets by providing a recycling service, for example?

Leading the way

At 2Pure Products, we’re proud to lead the way in many environmental initiatives, and we are constantly striving for further improvement.

When it comes to our product development, we’ve pledged to stop using virgin and single use plastics, using only 100% recycled plastic for our containers. Our OdorBac Tec4 multi- purpose odour and cleaning product is non-irritant, non- hazardous, and 100% biodegradable.

42 | TOMORROW'S CLEANING

However, it’s vital to look beyond the product and consider the environmental impact of the whole process. One way we are helping our customers slash their CO2

emissions and single-use plastic consumption is with our revolutionary closed loop recycling system. LoopBox is the first initiative of its kind in the UK to recycle both containers and packaging.

Our market-leading OdorBac Tec4 multi-purpose cleaner will now be delivered in the LoopBox and when the container is empty, it’s put back into the LoopBox, collected by our UK distributor, BCHS, and returned to their local depot.

On their next delivery date, we collect from BCHS and return to our factory, where the containers are sorted, cleaned, and dried. They are then refilled, repacked in a LoopBox, and redelivered to distributor depots, returning the containers to the closed loop recycling process.

This system prevents virgin plastic from ever being produced, reusing OdorBac’s recycled plastic bottle again and again. No additional journeys are made for collection or delivery, and 2Pure also offsets the carbon on all its scheduled delivery and collection journeys. Customers can see their plastic and CO2

₂savings every month, in a customised report.

By offering a high-performance product that’s been manufactured and delivered in the most sustainable way, using 100% renewable energy, we can support our customers in achieving their own green cleaning ambitions, and contribute towards the UK’s wider net zero targets.
