Energy Management

The importance of disaggregation

Nick Wellington, Strategic Communications Director, of Navetas Energy Management looks into disaggregation and why it will be vital for successful energy efficiency.

to be installed in 30 million homes, organisations and small businesses by 2019.

The introduction of the Government’s Carbon Plan in 2011, and its accompanying ‘Green Deal’ for homes and businesses, has set out the Government’s plan for achieving the reduction of UK carbon emissions by 80% by 2050.

Energy efficiency will be central to achieving these goals. Fortunately we are seeing an increasing focus on efficiency from Government, industry and energy users themselves: DECC announced in February the formulation of a new team, the Energy Efficiency Deployment Office, to promote energy efficiency schemes.

The new Energy and Climate Change Secretary, Edward Davey, has pointed out, energy efficiency is “the cheapest way of cutting carbon – and cutting bills for consumers. It has to be right at the heart of what we do.”

One of the key pillars for energy efficiency is going to be the roll out of smart meters. The Government’s plan is for 53 million smart meters

At its most basic the smart meter roll out promises more accurate meter readings and billing for energy users. However, this on its own will not necessarily enhance the energy efficiency of businesses and organisations. The roll out plan seems to be lacking real value for consumers. Smart meters have the potential to empower companies and organisations to control their energy usage and be able to make substantial savings but it is unclear how this will be achieved. The current range of smart meters just give an overall figure, which cannot on its own help consumers understand their energy consumption.

To empower businesses and organisations the Government needs to provide detailed usage data with informative easy to read displays. Businesses need to be able to understand the real impact of any changes to their energy use in order to make meaningful long term behavioural changes and become more energy efficient.

Disaggregation technology identifies individual appliances and measures their energy consumption; this could be anything from lighting and heating down to a kettle.

Based on the information gathered, this technology can provide businesses and organisations with rich data that can help save energy – and money. Disaggregation technology will empower businesses

and organisations to identify the most energy-hungry appliances and focus efforts on using those more efficiently, with up to the minute data revealing the immediate impact of any actions to enforce lasting behavioral changes.

With the ability to place the display anywhere within an organsiation, everyone can play a part in altering their behavior to save money and become more energy efficient.

Navetas Energy Management offers this technology and unlike other disaggregation technologies it is cost effective as it is able to monitor energy consumption at an individual appliance level from a single point, without the need for additional sensors. Intuitive displays (either online, in businesses and organisations or through smart phones for example) can present this data to enable consumers to easily monitor the appliances that cost them the most, make changes to their usage and immediately see the impact on their energy bills.

The installation of over 50 million smart meters into homes and small businesses provides a fantastic opportunity for the Government to empower organisations and businesses to take control of their energy usage, save money and buy into its plans to reduce emissions. But to do this, disaggregation needs to be at the core of smart meters.
