FEATURE

To further develop the skills and knowledge of our members, FeRFA is now running a series of upskilling courses throughout 2010. These courses cover a series of topics, such as decorative

resin flooring systems, static dissipative, slip resistance, flowable screeds, grinding and polishing, providing another opportunity to learn new techniques and practices. For career enhancement support,

the NVQ level 3 and level 4 in Supervisory/Project Management are available.

In times of economic downturn, the temptation may be to consider training as a low priority, which is a very short sighted and

dangerous viewpoint. Of greater concern, however, is that the level of the funding which was designed to support training is decreasing rapidly. Government initiatives such as Train to Gain (Learning Skills Council Funding) has apparently run out, and the CITB levy which was set up specifically to give contractors an individual pot of training money, bearing in mind the contractors are legally obliged to pay contributions into this pot, has now suffered two sets of reductions: 10% reduction in August 2009, and a further 15% reduction in January 2010. Some of the grant funded training initiatives have been withdrawn completely, and yet the cost of gaining a qualification is increasing. Despite these setbacks, it is very reassuring to see the number of NVQ achievements by FeRFA members increasing month on month, a real testimony to their commitment to training and the future of the industry.
