DESIGNING SCHOOLS FOR THE FUTURE – ONE CARPET AT A TIME

Burmatex, one of the UK’s leading innovators in carpet tile design has recently taken two education establishments under its wing.

They have recently completed a two-phase refurb project at Huddersfield University as well as working on the Building Schools for the Future Programme at Nailsea School in Bristol.

The facilities manager at Huddersfield University approached Burmatex to provide a contemporary and distinctive carpet design that would be hard wearing, after being inspired by its design- led products at an exhibition. The Burmatex in-house design team then created a scheme for the 1,000m² multi-purpose conference room and surrounding corridors that included new tailored loop pile tile, sector and structure bonded tiles, zip and code, highlighting the versatility and coordination of the ranges across all price points.

Over at Nailsea School, Burmatex worked directly with students and staff, to specify a 7,500m² installation at the Technology and Media Arts College. The education flooring specialist provided

product samples in different colours and textures, for consideration as part of the novel approach intended to give pupils and teachers an active voice in the design process.

Following feedback, the Burmatex in-house design team developed an overall scheme for classrooms, corridors, break out and reception areas, combining standard colours from the

The resulting interior is one that connects with its users, creating a learning environment where students can truly express themselves and that performs in every sense of the word.

PERFECT FLOOR FOR A CO-OP STORE

When Lincolnshire Cooperative decided to extend and refurbish its busy Branston Foodstore one of the main considerations was the floor. The terrazzo tiles which made up the existing 380 sq.m. floor were looking very old and tired; many were cracked with substantial damage to the joints.

An attractive new floor covering was required that could be overlaid on these tiles. It was vital that the new floor would meet the heavy demands of this busy retail environment, have good slip resistance and in order to provide the highest hygiene standards be

12 seamless and easy to clean.

One of the main stipulations was that any new floor had to be installed within a strict programme. The work had to be carried out over a 14 hour period during a single Sunday, otherwise the whole store refurbishment programme could be jeopardised.

The Retail Resin Flooring team at Q-Flooring have a wealth of experience of working to strict deadlines within commercial environments. As soon as areas of floor had been shot blasted they followed immediately behind applying the scratch levelling coat. In this way downtime was kept to an absolute minimum.

The acrylic resin system used was selected as it could be fully cured two hours after application of

the final seal coat, further reducing the floor refurbishing programme. In this case other trades could work on the floor on the Monday morning. Unlike the previous floor it is seamless, there are none of the problems that can be

Lincolnshire Cooperative is delighted with the result. Lincolnshire Co-operative’s Chief Executive Ursula Lidbetter said: “We’ve got a lot of loyal members and customers in the Branston area and we’re really pleased to be able to provide them with a much improved shopping environment.” The new floor is certainly a major element in this.
