FEATURE | YEARBOOK 2013 /14
As subfloor preparation is such a vital part of flooring installations, Darren takes on the role of would-be customer very well, asking each member of the team why, for example, he needs to pay for a DPM and whether or not he can “get away with not having one.” He assesses the budding Master Installers not just on their installation techniques and product knowledge, but also on how they answer these challenging questions and how they conduct themselves. “The way I teach may look strict,” he commented. “But if a consumer uses one of my Master Installers, I want them to be happy. Not just with the installation, but the whole process. I have to be 100% confident with them myself before I can consider approving them to others.”
Seeing the Master Installer’s course first-hand really opens your eyes to the quality of both the course and Darren’s guidance. When challenged about his high standards, Darren replied: “Some places don’t seem to care about the attendees once they leave the training facility, which I find upsetting. Unlike many other schemes, we don’t just hand our trainees a certificate of completion before showing them the door for good. Instead, we actively work to promote their skills and workmanship to consumers through a variety of channels to ensure that the course is worth their time and effort.”

All Master Installers will have their details on the ‘find an installer’ section of the main consumer Quick-Step website at
www.quick-step.co.uk, which receives thousands of visits per month, and retailers will have access to specialist point of sale and marketing support if they offer the Master Installer service. “Thanks to our dedicated marketing efforts, consumers are now very aware that they simply will not get the same benefits if they do not use an approved Master Installer,” Darren continued. “The two year manufacturer’s guarantee that supports all Quick-Step Master installations is a serious attraction in these austere times, so we encourage fitters to find out just how we can help their business.”
Other advantages of becoming a Master Installer include the ability to qualify for the government-backed TrustMark scheme for tradespersons and access to Master Installer clothing and van stickers.
