SPOTLIGHT ON:
INNOVATION
This month, our Assistant Editor, Eve Douglas, looks at some of the companies that are going the extra mile to prove that flooring most certainly isn’t boring.

The inspiration for this piece largely came from my attendance of the Harrogate Flooring Show. I knew from various press releases and tales of previous shows from my fellow colleagues that I was in for a good time, but
even I couldn’t have imagined some of the brilliant products and ranges that were on offer.
Vorwerk are one such company that were at Harrogate this year, with their amazing interlocking carpet tiles that allow the
customer to create the exact type of rug or carpet they want, in whichever colour or texture they fancy. Ian Hammond, the UK Sales Director of Vorwerk, explained to us that each box of their jigsaw- style carpet tiles is between £70 and £90 and that it contains eight tiles, perfect for if you want a small rug, and ideal if you want a big one made up of different
colours and textures. Ian told us that the idea behind allowing the customer to, in a way, design their own carpet largely came from the fact that some architects, wanting to indulge their artistic side, were used to just “building buildings”, and got annoyed at the fact that they couldn’t control the interiors in the same way. With Vorwerk’s carpet tiles you can create the exact look you want, without having to pay a fortune for a customised design.

Another company that are undoubtedly leading the way in innovation are ege, a Danish company that are one of the leading suppliers of unique flooring in the world. Founded in 1938 by a man who was renowned for his “great vision”, Mads Ege Damgaard’s constant efforts to meet the ever changing demands of the market meant he was always looking for new ways to break ground and supply innovative design to his customers.
