Single zone in Victorian villa A Nu-Heat system was retrofitted into the hallway of one seaside1850s Victorian property with a joisted floor, very high ceilings (3.2m) and thresholds into other rooms. Heat loss calculations showed that the presence of an enclosed porch at either end of the hallway made UFH viable, and hardwood thresholds were made to disguise the difference in levels between the hall and other rooms. The UFH was put between the joists with insulation and foil below. The floor covering used was ceramic tile with flexible

adhesive and grout. The owner is now having UFH put into the new kitchen extension as they were so pleased with the system in the hall.


Country house redevelopment


When a mansion in Kent was developed into 28 apartments, the restoration process needed to ensure that the character of the building would be retained. The internal specification was extremely high, to match the quality of the property. With huge windows the option of oversized

three days on site assessing the build structure and running a complete audit of the building fabric. This led to the recommendation of internal insulation to be integrated within the build to aid heat retention. The use of UFH also provided an ideal acoustic solution to the need for neighbours to be unaware of adjacent properties.


Comfort in the castle Nu-Heat recently supplied a system for Exeter Castle, which was receiving a complete makeover from courthouse into


a ‘spectacular venue for culture, commerce and living’. Part of the development includes the renovation of the three courtrooms into function rooms for weddings, parties and conferences. Underfloor heating is being installed in screed into each room. Court Three has been transformed into ‘The Ballroom’ (220sqm), complete with giant glitterball. Court Two (150sqm) is almost ready in its new guise as The Gallery and the renovation of Court One is now underway. The use of underfloor heating means that the stunning features of each of the rooms is unaffected by radiators. When radiators are used to heat large rooms such as these the warmth is often only felt close to the radiators. The radiant heat generated throughout the room means that everyone will feel the benefit.


The possibilities afforded by underfloor heating in refurbishment projects are tremendous – but the system should only be specified once an experienced design and supply company such as Nu-Heat has confirmed that it is a feasible option.
